_After wildfires devastated Maui in 2023, Hawaii’s governor, Josh Green, knew the state needed to put more resources toward climate change adaptation. He_ [_launched_](https://governor.hawaii.gov/newsroom/office-of-the-governor-news-release-governor-green-names-climate-advisory-team-members/) _a special Climate Advisory Team to come up with solutions, and the group suggested a new tax on tourism. The resulting “_[_green fee_](https://governor.hawaii.gov/newsroom/office-of-the-governor-news-release-gov-green-signs-historic-senate-bill-1396-codifying-a-green-fee-to-mitigate-climate-impacts-in-hawaii/)_” was signed into law in May of this year. It is the_ [_first of its kind_](https://governor.hawaii.gov/main/historic-green-fee-launched-to-combat-climate-change-in-hawai%CA%BBi/) _in the U.S., and is expected to generate $100 million annually for climate resiliency projects._

**What is the single most important action you think should be taken in the next year to advance the climate agenda?**

We need greater public investment in climate adaptation efforts, particularly restoring natural environmental resources and defenses. The state of Hawaii is the first U.S. state to initiate a visitor green fee, which will generate $100 million annually to fund environmental restoration efforts and adaptation support. Thanks to this policy, when travelers visit Hawaii, they are helping to fund and support our entire state’s community health and resilience and will enhance our natural resources.

**What’s one sustainability effort you personally will try to adopt in the next year, and why?**

The state of Hawaii is committed to working through the next year to support updating our electrical infrastructure to push for greater efficiency, reliability, and importantly, to transition away from the predominant use of oil in our state’s electrical generation. Using oil to generate electricity is inefficient, costly, and carbon intensive, but currently makes up almost 70% of our state’s energy generation. Through executive action and public-private collaboration, we will aggressively support the buildout of local renewable energy like rooftop solar. We also will push for fuel alternatives to oil, achieving greater energy security, lower costs for local residents, and significantly reduced emissions on our way to our 2045 decarbonization goals.

**What gives you hope about the future of the planet?**

Pushing for grounded solutions that prioritize the safety, resilience, and affordability of our communities is entirely in our hands. It will just take political will and decisiveness. Climate and public policy issues are very complex, however, approaching problems from a pragmatic perspective will enable us to balance potentially competing priorities and safeguard the future. This is easier said than done, but major reforms that benefit society across multiple benchmarks (economic growth, emissions, health, security, etc.) are possible—it’s what we are doing now in Hawaii. And for that, we should all have hope and optimism.
