_Al Subbloie is the founder of Budderfly, a fast growing U.S. company offering energy management services like smart HVAC, advanced controls, and real-time energy monitoring to help systems run more efficiently. The company is currently developing_ [_virtual power plants that will_ ](https://time.com/collections/best-inventions-2025/7318521/budderfly-virtual-power-plant-vpp/)_allow it to remotely orchestrate energy from distributed off-grid sources like batteries, solar panels, and other renewables, and shift loads between small business franchises like McDonald’s, Orangetheory, and Applebee’s that could reduce the amount of energy they extract from the grid during peak times. Last year, the company says it helped business clients save more than 155 million kWh of energy._

**What is the single most important action you think the public, or a specific company or government, needs to take in the next year to advance the climate agenda?**

I believe there’s a combination to every lock, and the same applies to climate solutions. In the year ahead, we must focus on leveraging business models that make adoption frictionless and climate action profitable, enabling change at scale. Capitalism is our strongest tool; we need to focus on shaping innovative financial models capable of scaling what’s already proven, rather than just chasing new technologies. By unlocking new sources of capital through financial innovation, we can transform recurring energy costs into revenue-generating investments, thereby accelerating meaningful and widespread change.

**What gives you hope about the future of the planet?**

Hope isn’t a strategy; opportunity is. Today’s market dynamics create enormous potential for accelerated change. Energy is scarce, and rising demand from EVs, AI, and electrification already exceeds supply. More energy will be needed to power the world, and economics will favor clean energy, efficiency gains, and nuclear as the top solutions. Fewer emissions are simply a better outcome and will prevail over time. The speed of change rewards those who move first. While these challenges are global, I’m confident they represent ample opportunity for those willing to lead.

**If you could stand up and talk to world leaders at the next COP, what would you say?**

We’re moving too slowly because energy solutions are fragmented, with too many pursued in silos. To accelerate change, we need to focus on business models that scale proven approaches and drive profitability through better outcomes. Capitalism can be a powerful tool if harnessed effectively, while reliance on government funding often introduces delays and shifting priorities. The private market can move faster and use innovative approaches to drive mass adoption. There are already examples of this working—our task is to expand them and act with urgency for the planet.
