Yet death itself carries a heavy environmental toll: cremation releases an estimated 360,000 tons of CO₂ each year, while traditional funeral practices like embalming bury some 2.5 million gallons of toxic chemicals into the ground, according to a [2018 report.](https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/67bcfb5c31ea0933cd0c384d/68814282d600ad6c303488af%5FComparing%20Footprints%20The%20Environmental%20Impact%20of%20Funeral%20Choices.pdf) Darren Crouch, who co-founded environmentally responsible funeral product company Passages International and serves as board president of the Green Burial Council, is determined to change that. Under his leadership, more than 300 cemeteries, funeral homes, and product providers across the United States have adopted eco-friendly practices, from forgoing embalming to offering biodegradable caskets, proving that even the oldest rituals can evolve for the climate age. “People driving electric or hybrid vehicles, eating organic produce, spending time outdoors, when they make funeral arrangements, they’ll have options,” Crouch tells TIME_._ What began as a fringe idea is now a standard-setting movement, reshaping how cemeteries, funeral homes, and suppliers approach sustainability, with a certification system that keeps greenwashing in check. When the Council was founded in 2005, Crouch says, many professionals resisted the idea of “green” funerals. But he persuaded them there was demand, and he was right: 61% of Americans would consider an eco-friendly funeral, according to a 2025 [survey ](https://nfda.org/news/statistics)by the National Funeral Directors Association, citing both environmental values and potential cost savings. Crouch has since worked directly with funeral providers to shift the industry’s mindset from “Why should I?” to “How do I?” The council plans to establish a new standard for body care products this year to guide the growing field of formaldehyde-free embalming innovations. Crouch answered TIME’s survey on the state of the climate movement: **What is the single most important action you think the public, or a specific company or government, needs to take in the next year to advance the climate agenda?** We need to get past the polarizing political bickering to engage the public to all do their small part. In addition, legislate simple but impactful changes to reduce waste such as requiring the tops of plastic bottles to remain attached when opened, or eliminating the use of plastic and polystyrene hot and cold drinks. There is a lot of waste that could be eliminated if the public was better educated and engaged. **What’s one sustainability effort you personally will try to adopt in the next year?** At Passages we are committed to working with the funeral industry to reduce its environmental impact by encouraging the use of more sustainable processes and products. Conventional funeral practices are not sustainable and have a significant environmental impact. By educating the public about greener funeral options, emissions from cremations can be reduced and cremated remains can be returned to families in biodegradable and fair trade urns. In addition, natural burial can be prioritized over more resource intensive conventional burial. **What is a climate solution that isn't getting the attention or funding it deserves?** I believe that we need to move more quickly and decisively to replace fossil fuels with more sustainable fuels. There are several interesting innovations that could be used to power our homes, businesses and transportation systems that would reduce carbon emissions and reduce pollution significantly. If businesses and the public do not adopt these newer options, governments should mandate it. **What gives you hope about the future of the planet?** The younger generations are more engaged and informed about climate change. They understand that without taking action, we will severely impact our ability to reverse the damage already done. It is not too late, but we need to take action now. **If you could stand up and talk to world leaders at the next COP, what would you say?** We need to come together and make changes. The U.S. in particular should be setting an example and not shirking its responsibility. Small changes that would not impact people’s lives significantly would make noticeable differences and would engage everyone to continue to prioritize sustainability and waste reduction.
