For Yann Quilcaille, the natural world and economic systems are inextricable. Having earned degrees in both economics and planet science, his research today focuses not only on extreme climate events, but also on how major carbon emitters are contributing to them. “If we want to address the climate crisis,” Quilcaille says, “we need to understand both angles, the human and the natural systems—and link them.”

His new [study](https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-025-09450-9), published in the journal _Nature_ in September, explicitly links emissions from the world’s largest carbon emitters—companies including ExxonMobil and Saudi Aramco—to the worst heat waves over the past quarter century. Quilcaille, the study’s lead author, and a team of researchers analyzed 213 heat waves between 2000 and 2023, assessing the contributions of major corporations that rely on fossil fuels.

Ultimately, they found that the 180 largest fossil fuel and cement companies have been responsible for about half of the world’s carbon emissions dating back to the 19th century. Moreover, many 21st-century heat waves would not have been possible without them. “We knew it was going to cause some noise,” Quilcaille says. “So, we went above and beyond to make sure what he had was clear and that it was as robust as possible.”

The study has already created a stir among climate scientists, and Quilcaille expects that its findings will be used in legal proceedings against emitters. (He stresses that while the study assesses contributions, it does not assign direct responsibility for climate events.) “My hope is that more will follow in these tracks,” he says of the need for further accountability research. “It’s important for society to know how these big actors are impacting our lives.”

Quilcaille answered TIME’s survey on the state of the climate movement:

**What is the single most important action you think the public, or a specific company or government, needs to take in the next year to advance the climate agenda?**

The financial support towards the production of fossil fuels must be transferred towards renewable energies. Mitigating climate change requires rapid reductions in emissions, and fossil fuels are the biggest source. Their production continues due to sustained financial support, despite renewable energies now being cheaper than fossil fuels. Thus financial institutions need to acknowledge that it is now a rational action, for the environment and for the economy, for today and for the future.

**What’s one sustainability effort you personally will try to adopt in the next year?**

I will continue shifting my diet, towards more plant-based food. Changing my habits takes time, but it makes sense for my health, our environment, and global well-being.

**What is a climate solution that isn't getting the attention or funding it deserves?**

While I have mentioned that we already have the solutions to phase out fossil fuels, there is a broader issue. Most of us are consuming and wasting too much: food, transport, energy, transport, clothing, etc. The priority should be on goods that are better distributed, with less waste, of higher quality, and that lasts longer. Thanks to our consuming choices, we can redefine the markets and reduce our individual footprints.

**What gives you hope about the future of the planet?**

First, it is not in my personality to give up: I have set my mind to make as much of a difference as I can, so I will. Then, the citizen support towards climate action is actually higher than we perceive. We have the solutions, we have the motivations, so I hope that we are getting close from a societal threshold that would trigger cascading decisive actions.

**If you could stand up and talk to world leaders at the next COP, what would you say?**

Today, you have a chance to change the world. Instead of plunging towards a fragmented and decaying world, you have the power to progress together towards a sustainable world. This path is the most rational for our economies, our societies, our resources and the environment, be it today and tomorrow. You have an opportunity to be remembered as the leaders that saved our world, and this is not an exaggeration.
