The centuries-spanning book begins in 2012 with the discovery of a journal written by a Lutheran pastor named Arthur Beaucarne. His 100-year-old diary offers a look at life in 19th-century Montana, where violence between the newly arrived white settlers and the Indigenous people they displaced is a daily occurrence. In Arthur’s final entry, written in March 1912, he details the ghastly killing of an unidentified man who was found skinned like a buffalo. Arthur writes that he believes a member of his ministry—Good Stab, a troubled man from the Blackfeet tribe—may know something about the incident, but the pastor vanishes before ever writing another word. In order to solve the mystery of Arthur’s disappearance, the book switches between his diary entries detailing his strange encounters with Good Stab and Good Stab’s own personal accounts of his tragic life.
