This summer Bloomberg Business [identified](http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-06-26/one-of-these-women-may-win-the-struggle-to-run-wall-street-firm) three women who are the closest to becoming the first female CEO of a Wall Street firm. All three are in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) professions: a behavioral scientist, a mathematician and an engineer. Yet the number of women equipped with STEM skills is shrinking. Failing to check this trend is a significant barrier to increasing the number of female leaders, and it can put the nation at a disadvantage.

It’s not simply a question of evening up the numbers. Women are invaluable employees. They’re resilient, solid team players and great communicators. Companies with more [women](http://www.mckinsey.com/~/media/McKinsey/dotcom/homepage/2012%5FMarch%5FWomen%5FMatter/PDF/WomenMatter%202013%20Report.ashx) in leadership perform better financially than the industry average.

By 2020, there will be [1.2 million jobs](https://www.ncwit.org/resources/numbers) requiring computer-related skills in the U.S. This should offer amazing opportunities for employees with STEM skills, regardless of gender. Yet data show that in 2011, just about [17%](http://nces.ed.gov/programs/digest/d12/tables/dt12%5F349.asp) of computer and information sciences majors in the U.S. were women. Even worse, this number represents a decline: In 1984, the number of women developing computer and information science skills was nearly [37%](http://nces.ed.gov/programs/digest/d12/tables/dt12%5F349.asp).

This trend is clearly heading in the wrong direction. Fortunately, it’s not irreversible.

Some universities are offing promising signs. Women [outnumbered](http://www.sfgate.com/education/article/Tech-shift-More-women-in-computer-science-classes-5243026.php) men for the first time in 20 years in UC Berkeley’s introductory computer science course last year. At Carnegie Mellon, [40%](http://www.cmu.edu/news/stories/archives/2014/june/june5%5Fwomenincomputerscience.html) of incoming computer sciences majors are women. Stanford has also seen an increase in the number of its female computer science majors. We must learn what these universities are doing right in order to spread their success to other schools.

Better gender balance at a handful of universities is not necessarily an indicator of wider progress. Thousands of schools compete against one other for a relatively small number of high school women who choose STEM paths. We must increase this pool of girls by starting young.

The non-profit Girls Who Code is a great example of an organization that is working to show high school girls how exciting, compelling and engaging coding and technology can be. This group aims to provide computer science education and exposure to [1 million young women by 2020](http://girlswhocode.com/about-us/). Private-sector engagement with organizations like Girls Who Code, and with colleges and universities, is essential for showing women what skills the market needs.

Female engineers have helped design bridges and train stations. Female astronauts have used math to calculate the distance, speed and velocity involved in piloting a spacecraft. A female scientist figured out how to modify genomes to create better plants, revolutionizing biotechnology. Showing young girls—and boys—the career possibilities that science, technology, engineering and math skills can provide is key to breaking down one significant barrier to advancing women in leadership. It is also essential to truly creating the workforce of the future.
