Wes Moore, a young Democrat who is on a mission to reclaim American patriotism for people who feel alienated from it. He’s only the third Black person in history to be elected governor and the only Black governor currently in office. He’s also a military veteran, a former nonprofit CEO, and a bestselling author. Gov. Moore and I talked about how to reframe American patriotism, even while reckoning with our country’s racist past. You can listen to the full episode in the player above, but here are a handful of excerpts from our conversation: ### **On his thoughts on the U.S.’s exist from Afghanistan:** I absolutely think they could have done it better. It was a very challenging time for a lot of Afghan vets… I personally was reconnecting with a lot of people who I served with, and a lot of us were touching base in some cases for the first time since we’ve really deployed. And that pain and that frustration was real… And it wasn’t political. This is not a political conversation. It wasn’t about what party did this or what administration. This was literally just a raw pain for a lot of people who had to watch what happened. ### **On how he reconciles his patriotism with awareness of America’s racist past:** I am literally the grandson of someone who was run out of this country by the Ku Klux Klan, right?…Right? So the fact that I can be both this grandson of someone who was run outta this country by the Ku Klux Klan, and also be the first black governor in the history of the state of Maryland. Both of those two things are facts and they can live together. But the power of those two things living together is that shows the beauty of our evolution and the beauty of our journey, right. Is that we were never a country that was intended to be static. We were never a country that was intended to mark time. We were always intended to push and to pull and to draw that moral arc to a better place. And that’s why this idea that patriotism somehow means pulling back rights, that patriotism means telling people where they can and can’t go, what they can and can’t read, if women should have reproductive rights: that’s not patriotism. ### **On what it means to be a progressive patriot:** It’s reframing patriotism. It’s patriotism that when we say that we are gonna get to 100% clean energy by 2035, when we say things like, we want to ensure that we are gonna be the offshore wind capital of the United States… that’s a patriotic frame because it means that we’re creating a future that everybody can see and enjoy. When I say that we are going to be a place that is going to respect women’s reproductive rights and be a safe haven for abortion rights and stop injecting politicians in the conversations between that should be exclusively between a woman and her doctor, that’s patriotism. We not shying away from it. I am a very proud, progressive patriot. ### **On what it means to live in an imperfect union:** I want people to understand that we still have work to do, but at the same time, I want them understand that the work that we still have to do is not a reason for us not to acknowledge how much work has been done. You know, I feel like we put ourselves in these corners where it’s either you are blindly supportive, or you are blindly unsupportive, and I think both are really complex and really dangerous when they live in isolation. I think we have to remember that we are living in an imperfect union. As long as we have people who do not have access to basics. As long as we have people don’t have access to healthcare, as long as we have children who are coming up in schools that are not giving ’em what they need. As long as we have people who are working jobs, in some cases, multiple jobs and still living at or below a poverty line, we are living in an imperfect society right now that has to be understood… Yet at the same time, if we’re not acknowledging our progress, if we’re not acknowledging what we’ve gotten done, if we’re not taking a moment and taking a beat and giving thanks to those who put in the work before us, then we’re not just being disrespectful, we’re being disingenuous. And so the thing that I would ask people to do is make space for both. Make space for both of those truths to be real and to know that uh, that one should not contradict or counteract the other. _These excerpts have been edited and condensed for clarity._ ## Transcript You are living history. You are the embodiment of a hoax in the dream of those who sacrifice before you. You are the living proof. That while progress is not promised it is possible. My first time voting was this year and I voted for governor elect Westmore. Westmore is now Maryland's first ever black governor and only the third black governor elected in any US state as he makes us history. He's aware of how his personal history has influenced his trajectory. I'm a product of a grandfather who love this country more than anyone I've ever met my life while he was born in the United States. The Ku Klux Klan, random out his father. My great-grandfather was a minister and they ran him out because he was a vocal Minister and eventually started getting death threats and they picked up a silly mood middle night, will back to Jamaica. What's my family? If I should never come back to this country? And my grandfather did cuz he said he was born here. And he said I deserve to be here knowing and run me out. He came back here, he became a minister or just like his father. They think he realized this is my fight. That's why I have to stay and that's why I have to keep pushing. At the age of three more lost his father to a preventable illness. A few years later, his mother moved their family from Maryland to live with his grandparents in New York City. When he later started struggling in school and getting in trouble outside of it, his mother sent him to a military academy. I did when I was 13 years old military school it was your first time that you actually had to do everything on your own. That was the first time that I felt like I earned this and I love that feeling Westmore has since helped many titles, Rhodes, scholar Army Captain White House fellow investment, banker, nonprofit CEO and best-selling, Memoirs, some things, you experience how it really has prepared you. And and, and toughen you up is very resume has helped him politically as we saw, when we accompanied him in the weeks before his inauguration from, delivering the commencement speech at Morgan State University. A historically black college in Baltimore, to meeting with veterans on the states, Eastern Shore. Videos of the lowest name recognition that meant going out and talking to more people out there and just out what I'm thankful that I'm in a room full of Patriots. And people who understand what that word means. People who understand that patriotism is not waving a flag around. To understand this country is to understand its history and not just to be selective about its history. I can literally be the grandson of a man that the Ku Klux Klan ran out. And also in the same bread be a person who's 9 days away from becoming, the first black Governor nation-state go to those things. Two things of girl And we can't look at 1. Without understanding the other, I walked through life with an understanding of, it's an equities in his histories. but I also walk through life with a hope of the promise, That this country has offered you some that we want to make sure that it offers to all that was the foundation that this country was built on. This journey has never been about making history. It's about marching forward. Today is not an indictment of the past. Today is a celebration of our Collective future. I know this idea of what it means to fight for one. Another is going to be the key for our success. I think we continue to be sold this idea that life is binary. I think we continue to give him false choices. We can be more competitive and believe in economic growth and at the same time, save, but the economy needs to work for everybody and not just the people who are privileged in and Hoover in the rules. I think they both those two things can exist in the same sentence. These false choices continue to be given to us as a way of dividing us, as a way of asking this was tribe, we belong to, and then asking people to Forfeit and go into the wrong corners. And so, therefore nothing when I think about the challenges and that the state of Maryland facing and people say, well, who do you think you need in order to fix those things and get those things done? My answer. Simple everybody. Everybody in his first days in office, more released, a state budget proposal, that would raise the minimum wage increase tax, credits for immigrants in childcare and boost education, and transportation spending all without raising taxes. The budget which is subject to legislative approval. Also would find more signature plan a voluntary service here, available to every high school, graduate commencement speaker. That's going to be our next president. That's going to be our next president and I truly do believe that, And while your last exam so I have been taking your papers, might have been written and all that stuff might have been done. Let's be clear. Your work is just starting. And we need you to win. That Legacy will reflect how well you truly understood.
