Emma Rodriguez-Ayala, the general counsel and chief administrative officer at Ariel Investments—a Chicago-based firm with $13.5 billion in assets under management—spent a healthy chunk of 2024 delving into the analytics of women’s sports. What she and her colleagues found was compelling. Given the recent viewership and attendance increases, media rights for leagues like the [WNBA ](https://time.com/6979926/wnba/)and [National Women’s Soccer League](https://time.com/7014141/nwsl-women-soccer-collective-bargaining-agreement-draft/) (NWSL) are tremendously undervalued. Once the leagues renegotiate these contracts and secure more lucrative agreements—like men’s sports leagues did a little over a decade ago—franchise prices should skyrocket.

To supplement this deep dive, Rodriguez-Ayala, 43, also relied on the old-fashioned eye test. It’s easy to spot, for example, the girls and boys lining up at professional basketball and volleyball games, hoping to get autographs from the players. “The most exciting thing,” says Rodriguez-Ayala, “is to see our society change in real time.”

In January, Ariel [announced the launch](https://www.arielinvestments.com/article/introducing-project-level/) of Project Level, the company’s first fund focused on women’s sports investments, with Rodriguez-Ayala running its day-to-day operations. Project Level has already invested in the NWSL’s expansion team in Denver, which begins play next season, and League One Volleyball (LOVB), a network of some 2,000 youth teams across the country that also started a professional league (LOVB Pro) this year. The fund hopes to raise at least $500 million to build out its portfolio, with Rodriguez-Ayala pointing to international markets—women’s rugby in Australia, golf in Asia—as potential areas of growth.

Rodriguez-Ayala hails from Mayagüez, P.R., on the west coast of the island. Her mother, Emma Ayala, ran a beauty academy and served as an early role model. “My mom built a career pushing the boundaries of what women did at that time,” says Rodriguez-Ayala. “We would wake up and there'd be some random person from some random country doing business with my parents at the dining-room table. She forced them to go to Mayagüez to meet with her. She wasn’t like, ‘I’m going to go to San Juan to see you.’ She was like, ‘You’re going to come here.’”

For college, Rodriguez-Ayala moved to the mainland United States, where she attended St. Louis University. “I had to educate myself on what it was to be Latino in the U.S.,” she says. “I was a proud Puerto Rican, but a number of times people would be like, ‘Where is that in Mexico?’ You have to be very comfortable educating others without feeling any sort of personal attack.”

At the University of Chicago Law School, she had little interest in litigation. “It’s just not my jam,” she says. Business law, however, appealed to her, and after graduation she worked in alternative investments at a series of law firms and financial companies before joining Ariel in 2023\. From 2016 to 2020, Rodriguez-Ayala was president of the Chicago chapter of the Association of Latino Professionals for America, and she’s a board member of Angeles Investors, which seeks to fund Hispanic and Latino entrepreneurs. In 2018, the National Diversity Council named her a Top Latino Leader.

Rodriguez-Ayala hopes to show young professionals who look like her that they, too, can make waves. “It’s something that I think about a lot,” she says. “People know they can be in the room.”
