Although Karl-Anthony Towns grew up in Piscataway, N.J., as a fan of the NBA team across the Hudson River up the turnpike—the [New York Knicks](https://time.com/7287764/new-york-knicks-indiana-pacers-nba-playoffs-eastern-conference-finals-game-one-collapse/)—his Olympic hoop dreams lie elsewhere. At the 2028 Los Angeles Games, Towns hopes to represent the Dominican Republic, the birthplace of his late mother, Jacqueline Cruz-Towns and a country he’s forged close ties to, having first competed for the Dominican national team when he was 15\. In 2024, Towns announced he was providing major funding for a youth basketball facility near the city of Santiago.

“Simply put, they gave my mother life,” says Towns, 29, of the DR. “It’s only right I give them mine.”

The arena, an homage to Cruz-Towns—who passed away in 2020 [from COVID-19](https://www.espn.com/nba/story/%5F/id/30249666/minnesota-timberwolves-karl-anthony-towns-details-mother-battle-covid-19-coping-death)—is set to include a weight room, classroom space, community space, and access to physical therapy for young athletes. “We give them a chance to live out their dreams,” says Towns. “At the end of the day, the life skills made through playing sports is something that is more valuable than anything.”

Towns also played baseball as a kid, but before high school he felt compelled to dedicate himself to a single sport. “Being in eighth grade and being 6-ft. 9-in., it looked pretty good for basketball for me,” says Towns, who now stands at 7 ft.

After a year at the University of Kentucky, Towns was drafted first overall in the 2015 NBA Draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves, becoming one of the few Afro-Latino players in the league (his father Karl Towns Sr. is African American). He won [Rookie of the Year](https://www.espn.com/blog/statsinfo/post/%5F/id/118452/karl-anthony-towns-unanimous-nba-rookie-of-the-year) and made five All-Star teams with the Wolves before his trade to the Knicks prior to the 2024-25 season. In 2024, Towns won the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Social Justice Champion [award](https://www.nba.com/timberwolves/news/karl-anthony-towns-named-2023-24-kareem-abdul-jabbar-social-justice-champion) for his voting-rights advocacy on behalf of formerly incarcerated people. “Nothing makes you more of an American and a citizen than the ability to vote,” says Towns. “For that to be taken away from people who’ve just made a mistake in their life, I feel, was unfair. It was something I was going to fight for.”

The team’s coach last season, Tom Thibodeau, will not be coming back, however: the Knicks fired him in June. “I didn’t know what was happening,” says Towns. “I just knew that I left to finally get some R & R, and I’m hearing the news, so obviously I was surprised, like the rest of the world.”

“We had a successful year,” Towns explains. Still, he’s learned to roll with things as they come. “I’ve always had instability in my career,” he says. “You always think the best, and you also expect the worst. So you never know.” He adds that he’s looking forward to playing for Mike Brown, the coach who was hired to replace Thibodeau. “I’ve heard so many great things about him,” says Towns. “To be able to know him now as a person and to grow with him as a player, it’s going to be fun to go through this journey together.”

Despite his on-court success, impatient Knicks fans at times [criticized Towns’ defense](https://www.si.com/nba/knicks-players-coaches-frustrated-karl-anthony-towns-issue) and aggressiveness. “All criticism is good criticism. It gives me a chance to go back in the lab and then understand what I’ve got to work on,” says Towns. “Every year I’ve shown the fans and the sports world and NBA world that I’m always continuing to find another level, reinventing myself for the betterment of the team’s success. And I’m going to continue to do that until I have the ring.”

Towns says he’s already visualizing what the diamonds on that championship jewelry would look like. To win New York’s first NBA title in 53 years, while rallying the city’s 700,000-strong Dominican population behind him, would fulfill a dream. “I know you want me to find words, but words can’t describe how bad I want to win a ring,” says Towns. “It doesn’t need words.”
