Though people might see her as an activist, Daphne Frias considers herself more of a storyteller. “Defining myself as a storyteller really means that I’m putting people in my community first,” she says.

Frias, who lives with cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair for mobility, has highlighted her own experiences and those of her local community to advocate for climate solutions that are inclusive of everyone. “My work is really tying the knots between disability justice, the climate crisis, and public health.”

Growing up in a Dominican family in West Harlem, Frias would see the disparity between her predominantly Spanish-speaking, immigrant neighborhood and the downtown Manhattan neighborhood where she went to school: “I even saw the differences in air quality,” she says. “I would wake up in the morning and it’d be really hazy and foggy, and then as we got downtown, the air would clear up.”

But many in her community didn’t understand the impact of their environment on their health—and important information was often communicated only in English. So Frias took it upon herself to help connect the dots. “I fell in love with public health when I was 14, and it helped me contextualize the things that I was experiencing in my life, like [environmental racism](https://time.com/5864704/environmental-racism-climate-change/) and different levels of injustice,” she says.

Frias, 27, believes this awareness has only become more important as the planet has grown more inhospitable. “We understand better now how pollution is disabling, and how \[we’re seeing\] higher incidences of cancer because of the climate crisis,” she says. “The more that we continue to silo disability and climate, the further we will actually be from creating equitable climate solutions.”

Her advocacy has taken her to the U.N., where she joined a conversation with Secretary-General António Guterres [last fall](https://news.un.org/en/story/2024/09/1154626). In 2023, she served as the lead accessibility consultant for the March to End Fossil Fuels in New York City, which drew over 75,000 participants. She was also one of the spokespeople for the [global climate strikes](https://time.com/5682404/global-climate-strike/) on September 20, 2019—considered to be the largest ever. Addressing the climate crisis, she says, is not as complicated as people think. “The climate solutions are there,” says Frias. “We just have to convince people that we should fund them.”

Still, fighting for a sustainable future can seem like a tall task, so Frias, who has also worked on issues like voting rights and gun-violence prevention, has developed strategies for staying motivated. “One of the things I ask myself every day when I wake up is, how does the planet feel today?” she says, noting that in the face of more frequent natural disasters, it’s important to stay grounded in what she is fighting for. She also finds hope in the youth-led climate movement around the world. “I’m surrounded by community,” she says. “I’m not doing this work alone.”
