For decades, the space age has left Mexico mostly behind. It was not until 1985, more than a generation after human beings began traveling in space, that space-shuttle astronaut [Rodolfo Neri Vela](https://www.britannica.com/biography/Rodolfo-Neri-Vela) became the first—and for many years, only—Mexican citizen to leave the Earth. It was not until 2010 that Mexico established [a space agency](https://www.un-spider.org/network/regional-support-offices/mexican-space-agency-aem) of its own—one that gets by on just [a fraction of the budget](https://mexiconewsdaily.com/politics/mexican-space-agency/#:~:text=The%20ASF%20found%20that%20%E2%80%9C%5BT,participate%20as%20an%20external%20consultant.) of more established space agencies like NASA. Thirty-year-old [Katya Echazarreta](https://spaceforhumanity.org/blog/ca-1announcement) aims to change all that.

In 2022, Echazarreta, who splits her time between San Diego and Mexico City, became the second Mexican—and the first Mexican woman—to travel to space, launching aboard a [Blue Origin rocket](https://www.news9.com/story/62c4a89da021d7070c3708ee/first-mexicanborn-woman-to-go-to-space-describes-fascinating-journey) that carried her on a suborbital journey mirroring the trajectory flown by Alan Shepard—the first American in space—in 1961\. The flight lasted little more than 10 minutes, but back on Earth, Echazarreta hopes to make her influence felt in a far more enduring way—working to promote space education for kids and to turbocharge the space sector for Mexico and all of Latin America.


Echazarreta’s space pedigree runs deep. Born in Guadalajara, Mexico, she comes from a family of engineers—her father, her grandfather, her uncle—and followed their lead, studying electrical engineering at UCLA and Johns Hopkins University. From 2018 to 2021, she worked for NASA, first as an intern and then as a full-time hire. While there, she was involved in five missions, including the [Europa Clipper](https://science.nasa.gov/mission/europa-clipper/) and the [Perseverance Mars rover](https://science.nasa.gov/mission/mars-2020-perseverance/).

In 2019 Echazarreta began her push to follow those machines off the planet when she submitted her application to [Space for Humanity](https://spaceforhumanity.org/), a nonprofit that books ordinary people seats on a Blue Origin mission that would otherwise require a six-figure fare. It was not until 2022 that Echazarreta learned she had beaten out 7,000 other people for the opportunity. Once she flew, her age—she was just 26 at the time—her status as the first Mexican woman in space, and her telegenic charm quickly distinguished her from the [more than six dozen other people](https://www.blueorigin.com/news/new-shepard-ns-34-mission) who have made Blue Origin trips.

“I go from being an engineer at a desk to suddenly being a public figure that everyone is curious about,” she says.

She didn’t let that curiosity go to waste, pivoting to become a fierce champion of space innovation and establishing her own foundation—the [Fundación Espacial Katya Echazarreta](https://www.fundacionespacial.com/fundadora)—which provides free admission to space camp for children from Mexico and around the world. Echazarreta’s advocacy work has principally involved lobbying to broaden two provisions in the Mexican Constitution—Articles 28 and 73—so that they specifically cite space as a sector to be prioritized for development and give the legislature the power to pass appropriate laws. She hopes to use reforms pioneered in Mexico as a template for similar action throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. “The goal here is to provide a guide for other developing countries,” she says. In domains outside of politics, Echazarreta’s profile is continuing to grow. [Mattel has produced a Barbie doll](https://shop.mattel.com/pages/barbie-role-models-katya-echazarreta) in her likeness as part of its “Role Models” series (“Of course I said yes to being a Barbie,” she says). She was featured on the cover of [Mexican _Vogue_](https://www.katechazarreta.com/press), is a regular personality on [CBS’s _Mission Unstoppable_](https://www.cbs.com/shows/mission-unstoppable/) and previously appeared on [Curiosity Stream’s _Oddly Satisfying Science_](https://curiositystream.com/title/series/840) and [Netflix’s _IRL_](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7wx1P7mMoAM&t=37s) series. And she now has more than 400,000 followers on Instagram and TikTok. Having given birth to her first child last year, Echazarreta has a newfound sense of investment. “I believe that as a mother, and particularly as a Latina Hispanic woman,” she says, “it’s important to continue with these goals and dreams, which are going to prove to be very important for the next generations.”
