How communities can come together amid chaos in the current political climate_ by [Chantelle Lee](https://time.com/author/chantelle-lee/) ## Chantelle Lee Reporter  Three experts spoke about advocacy in the era of the Trump Administration on a panel moderated by TIME senior health correspondent Alice Park at the TIME Impact Leadership Forum on Martha’s Vineyard on Thursday. The discussion began with Park asking the panelists how recent cuts passed by Congress impacting SNAP and insurance benefits and school programs, among other areas, are affecting their work. Philip Cooper, founder and chief change agent of Operation Gateway Inc., which is focused on decreasing recidivism, replied that there’s “a lot of ambiguity that has led to anxiety” with the recent policy changes. But, he added, this is also a time for people to come together. “I believe that this storm is an opportunity to showcase what true leadership looks like,” he said. “We made it through COVID-19, we made it through Hurricane Helene, and right now, we’re making it through this ambiguity with all the federal cuts that have impacted us nonprofits.” Safara Malone, transgender youth advocate and policy specialist, spoke about how recent cuts targeting [diversity, equity, and inclusion](https://time.com/7210039/what-is-dei-trump-executive-order-companies-diversity-efforts/) threaten important programs for the LGBTQ+ community, such as HIV prevention and treatment efforts and women’s shelters and trans women’s shelters. She added that advocates need to shift their focus to more charity work and private sector funding. “The challenge that we’re in right now is: How do we continue to work?” Malone said. “Trans people are still going to exist under any Administration, and they always have existed.” Felicia DeHaney—vice president for program strategy at W.K. Kellogg Foundation, which sponsored the event in Martha’s Vineyard—stressed the importance of practicing empathy in the midst of the current political climate. “In order for us to make that connection, build that relationship authentically and meaningfully, we have to listen,” she said. “How many of us are going to self reflect and check ourselves on what we’ve heard from our community today?” Toward the end of the conversation, Park asked the panelists: What gives you hope? DeHaney replied that many things give her hope, and they’re all centered on children. “As a former teacher, I think about the aspirations and the things my students would wish and hope a lot, and every day, thousands of children are being born with those same aspirations, with those same big wishes and those big wants, and my hope for them is that all of them be able to reach their whole genius and potential in whatever they want to do,” DeHaney said. “My hope is that this conversation doesn’t sit here. We’ve heard about the chaos, \[but\] choose community over chaos.” For Malone, joy—Black joy, Black queer joy, and Black trans joy, in particular—bring her hope. “I think in the hardest times is when community comes together,” Malone said. “We’re going to exist as we are, we’re going to have fun, we’re going to create space for ourselves, we’re going to be in community together; I think that’s what is really going to keep driving us forward.” Cooper echoed the sentiment, closing out the discussion by leading the audience in a chant. “I want everybody to repeat after me, say: Community over chaos,” he said. _The TIME Impact Leadership Forum was presented by the W.K.
