The TIME Impact Leadership Forum on Martha’s Vineyard opened on Aug. 7 with a discussion about the role that young people play in holding leaders accountable and the best ways to foster intergenerational collaboration.

TIME Senior Correspondent Alice Park kicked off the panel, entitled “Building the Future: How Civic Engagement Drives Equitable Solutions,” by asking [David Hogg](https://time.com/7304031/march-for-our-lives-pam-bondi-shootings-jaclyn-corin/), co-founder of both Leaders We Deserve and March For Our Lives, whether one person can really make a difference, as the saying goes.

“Yes,” he said, without hesitating. “When people say you can't, no one person can do it—honestly, it's just because everybody thinks that that change doesn't happen more often.”

Hogg, a survivor of the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in 2018 and a [gun control activist](https://time.com/6186538/david-hogg-guns-march-for-our-lives/), argued that young people are already making a difference in elected office, citing Maxwell Frost, the first Gen Z congressman, who helped create the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention, which saw a 25% reduction in gun homicides in just the course of two years and about a 50% reduction in mass shootings since 2021\. (The office was closed after President Trump was re-elected in 2024.)

[María Teresa Kumar](https://time.com/6315421/america-latin-leaders-2023/), Founding President and Chief Executive Officer, Voto Latino, reminisced on founding the organization when she was only 29-years-old, inspired by Census reports that Latinos are the second largest demographic of Americans and would be responsible for the biggest growth in the U.S. from 2000 to 2010\. The organization has focused on mobilizing Latinos in key battleground states, registering them to vote, and encouraging them to run for office.

“We have to reimagine what America looks like,” Kumar said, to sum up her mission.

When asked what role the private sector can play in fostering intergenerational change, Carla Thompson Payton, Chief Strategist and Impact Officer, W. K. Kellogg Foundation (which sponsored the event), said the key is events like TIME’s leadership forum–bringing people from all walks of life together. When it comes to grant-giving, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation also focuses on backing organizations that help children–in order to support the next generation of leaders–and groups that are thinking ahead.

“What we do is invest in people, so that they can not only think about the urgency of now, but they have the space to begin thinking about what the next decade looks like,” Payton said. “Who are the people you need to have conversations with? What are the skills and the tools and the resources you need right now, so that you begin to imagine your future?”

Hogg talked openly about [growing up with ADHD](https://time.com/6271049/adhd-diagnoses-rising/) and dyslexia and how he benefited from special education programs in public schools that all Americans should have access to. More specifically, he explained what _not_ to say to young people trying to make an impact, like when older adults tell younger adults that their generation botched a lot of things, and now the young people will be our saviors.

“You're not dead yet. Help us,” he said. “You just need to ask, what can I do to help you? And actually listen, and do it.”

He added: “Are you going to be the wind or are you going to be the wind suck?”

During the Q&A session, Jean Dolin, Chief Executive Officer, Boston LGBTQ+ Museum of Art, History & Culture, asked the panel about how to ensure that civic engagement doesn’t get politicized.

“I do think that we are living in a moment where we have to decide which path we want to take, as America,” Kumar said. “Do we want to take the multicultural path of strength and resilience and possibility and opportunity? Or do we want to succumb to a vision of a tiny fraction of America?” She urged more attention to the fast-growing demographic of young voters, arguing, “The system is not adapting and changing fast enough to meet their needs.”
