Ivanna Richards was four years old the first time she zipped through the race track at speeds nearing 260 kilometers per hour—accompanying her father, a fellow competitive racer, during his training sessions. More than a decade later, she’s beating her dad at his own game, emerging as a player to watch in the male-dominated sport. 

The now 17-year-old Mexico City native has been setting the bar high, becoming the first Mexican young woman to be invited to drive in the F1 Academy—a racing series that launched in 2023 to encourage young girls to participate in the sport—where she tested an F4 in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain 

“From the first time I got on \[the track\], I really loved it and it has been a career where I have placed in every championship I have run in, so it has been very good,” the teen, who dreams of being a professional NASCAR driver, tells TIME in Spanish. Richards has been working hard at her gift ever since, serving as the ambassador for the Mexico Grand Prix and earning a spot to compete in the United States Legend Cars and a series called SuperKarts! USA this year. She’s even earned her professional racing license—but not her driver's license yet; she's still a year shy of Mexico's minimum driving age.

Despite typically low female participation in go-kart and race car driving, Richards says she does not feel intimidated by the lack of women in the sport. “Sometimes it does feel weird that it's all men and I'm the only woman,” she says. “But the truth is, I like it more because when I win, I put the name of women up high, and it's incredible.” 

Regardless of whether she ends up competing in the racecar or motorsport category, the young teen simply hopes she gets to keep driving for the rest of her life. “Perhaps it won’t be in the stellar categories of motorsports, but as long as I keep racing, I would love to do it.”
