Now, she’s made it a mission to recreate similar love for science among disadvantaged youth. In 2022, at the age of 12 and under COVID-19-era social gathering restrictions, Chiu, through the internet, formed Teen Animals da Scientists, a group promoting the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals through science education. Chiu, now 15, says there’s a global “vacuum” in science education. “Some people may think that science education is very expensive—if they cannot afford the daily necessities, then they won't really care about science education,” Chiu said. That’s why she has partnered with fellow teenagers from over 10 countries such as Pakistan, Ghana, and India to organize workshops and science education events. The topics are fun and light: from shark conservation to the basics of herbal medicine. Under Chiu’s leadership, the group has since published its own magazine, and has organized an ecology-focused cultural exchange, among many other workshops. For her, the dream is to increase events’ scale and to invite younger people from more countries. Chiu says she takes the role of a science promoter personally. “I believe that actually I have the power to make an impact in my community,” Chiu says. “Science can explain a lot of natural phenomena and it can also contribute to the invention of different kinds of products as well as technologies.
