The forum’s theme for 2026 is ‘A spirit of dialogue,’ something that TIME CEO Jessica Sibley and speakers at Monday’s dinner all focused on. The dinner also featured discussions on artificial intelligence and its use across all sectors, from trade to humanitarian efforts to research. “It’s not just about the technology. It’s really about what leaders, like all of you, choose to do with it, how to use it responsibly, where does investment get focused, and how leadership and good governance ensure that innovation absolutely serves society,” said Sibley in her opening remarks. The evening gave the opportunity for speakers to offer their insights, not only on areas of investment and change but also on their hopes for the future. Here’s what they had to say. ## **Matt Damon on water access and the role of women** Alongside [his work on-screen](https://time.com/7346935/the-rip-true-story/), Academy Award-winner Matt Damon has committed the last 20 years to improving people’s access to clean, safe drinking water and sanitation through [Water.org](http://water.org), which he co-founded alongside sanitation expert [Gary White](https://water.org/about-us/founders-board-team/). Speaking at the TIME100 Davos Dinner, Damon noted that roughly 2 billion people globally lack access to safe water, with 3.4 billion lacking access to adequate sanitation. “It’s a massive problem,” said Damon, who through his foundation has set up a loan program for financing water and sanitation projects with the [WaterCredit Initiative](https://water.org/solutions/watercredit/). In total, Water.org has reached 85 million people with its impact, providing loans to 15 million. “The beautiful thing is, this depends on the heroic efforts of these women,” said Damon, who explained that 90% of loans are given to women. “\[Lack of access to water\] disproportionately affects women and girls. Girls aren’t in school because they’re doing water collections. Speaking at the TIME100 Davos Dinner, Okonjo-Iweala noted that 2026 is a turbulent time for global trade. “The multilateral trading system has been bashed. We are seeing the greatest disruptions in 80 years,” said Okonjo-Iweala. “Most people think the system is dead and the WTO is no more, and that we’re living in a universe in which another system is building.” Okonjo-Iweala outlined that although the rate of global trade based on WTO terms has slightly declined, “it is such a resilient system that it will take a lot of hard knocks to pull it all down.” The Director-General acknowledged criticism of the organization. “I’m at the forefront saying we have to reform,” she said. “My members are working on it. I’m very proud of them.” But she did provide a direction of hope. “In this troubled world, one thing that inspires me is my continent. Africa,” said Okonjo-Iweala. And recently, even drawings of wooly mammoths have found their way to Lamm. “The thing that inspired us most was not what we were doing, but two years ago, we started getting letters. We started getting pictures of mammoths and not-so-well-drawn dodos from kids,” he said at the TIME100 Davos Dinner.
