In 2015, at the height of the [Baltimore protests](https://time.com/3841451/the-roots-of-baltimores-riot/), Calvin Butler—then the CEO of Baltimore Gas and Electric—opened a ball field in West Baltimore. He did it “to let those kids in that community know that people care.” That same year, he co-founded TouchPoint Baltimore, an organization working to magnify the impact of local nonprofits. “Those things don’t happen if I’m not CEO of BGE at the time,” he says.

Today, Butler serves as president and CEO of Exelon, which owns the pipes and wires that deliver electricity and gas to nearly 11 million customers across New Jersey, Maryland, Illinois, Delaware, Pennsylvania, and the District of Columbia. The 56-year-old is one of only nine Black CEOs running a Fortune 500 company, and remains acutely aware of the impact he’s positioned to create. “I happen to be in a position of responsibility to do something greater than just for myself,” he says. “It’s not about me.”

Butler, who feels deeply connected to his Christian identity, is clear on his purpose: to show up for the people and communities around him. Every year, he heads to Leo High School in Chicago—in “one of the most distressed neighborhoods in the city”—to mentor young men. “If I don't take the time to show up at schools, to speak to young people, to volunteer—shame on me,” he says. “It makes the days long and the nights short, but I think that's why I'm here.”

Under Butler’s leadership, Exelon has continued to invest in and scale its workforce development initiatives, offering various scholarships and running more than 90 programs across its operating regions, providing high-schoolers and college students with the skills and opportunities necessary to secure well-paid jobs in the energy sector. The company is also committed to working with diverse suppliers: in 2024, of the $8 billion Exelon spent with suppliers, $2 billion went to diversity-certified businesses (including certified women-, minority-, veteran-, and LGBTQ-owned businesses); more than half of that $2 billion went to businesses located in areas where Exelon operates.

Last year, Exelon announced its intention to invest $38 billion through 2028 in infrastructure, primarily to meet AI’s rising electricity demands. Butler says that this, too, will benefit local communities if done in the right way—for example, by implementing “transmission security agreements” which commit data centers to paying for 80% of their projected load, regardless of whether it ultimately materializes. “The small customers shouldn't be paying for the investment that's being made for the large customers if it doesn't materialize,” he says.

Butler admits he has a competitive side. Exelon comprises six local electric and gas companies. [According](https://www.exeloncorp.com/grid/exelon-is-raising-the-bar-on-industry-reliability) to the company’s internal benchmarking, four of them are ranked as the first, second, fourth, and seventh most reliable in the country when compared to relevant peers. (Reliability being a measure of both how often they lose power, and for how long.) Butler thinks they can do better. “I tell my team, "Hey, congratulations—but we're shooting for one, two, three, and four,” he says.

This worldview is one Butler aims to pass on to his own kids. “Whether you're playing Monopoly or basketball in the driveway, my view is that if you’re going to do something, do it with excellence,” he says. “That’s how we show up.”
