Courtesy Julie Skarratt For more than two decades, [Thelma Golden](https://time.com/collections/100-most-influential-people-2024/6964214/thelma-golden-2/) has been one of the most influential people in art. In 2005, she was named the director and chief curator of the Studio Museum in Harlem, which has been dedicated to promoting artists of African descent since it opened in 1968\. During her tenure, Golden has turned the nearly 60-year-old institution into the preeminent space for Black art in New York City, expanding its impressive archive of works spanning the Harlem Renaissance to contemporary artists while also creating a space where people can engage with the art and one another. “Making art accessible, especially to young people, I know how transformative it can be,” says Golden, 60\. “Not simply because one might go into it as a career, but more because of the way in which it opens up the world.” That’s what it did for Golden. As a teenager, she went to high school on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, walking distance from some of the world’s most renowned museums, where she found herself spending most of her afternoons. “Before I ever traveled abroad, I had a sense of the vastness of the world just walking through the museums in the city,” she says. One of her favorites was the Whitney Museum of American Art, where, in 1991, four years after graduating from Smith College with degrees in art history and African-American studies, she became the museum’s first Black curator. Golden worked at the Whitney for nearly a decade. While there, she says, “there was an incredible willingness to make space for my voice.” She strived to promote artists of the African diaspora whose work had historically been ignored by major art institutions. One of her most groundbreaking exhibits was 1994’s[_Black Male: Representations of Black Masculinity in Contemporary Art_,](https://whitney.org/education/blog/looking-back-at-black-male1) which explored and subverted stereotypes about Black men and their sexuality. The seminal exhibit, which featured 29 artists of different races, genders, and ethnicities including painter Jean-Michel Basquiat, photographer Lorna Simpson, and sculptor Jeff Koons, attracted a more diverse crowd than the museum was previously known for, but it was also heavily criticized for its provocative subject matter. At 29 years old, Golden was suddenly forced to publicly defend the exhibit’s intentions, as well as her own qualifications for the job, which some felt she was too inexperienced to hold. The discourse showed her “the power and the possibility of creating a dialogue in and around art,” she says. It also reminded her that “institutions are the people that are leading and working in them,” and curators have the power to redefine what a museum can be. Nearly 40 years into her much-lauded career, Golden is still fighting to make American museums more inclusive. As a self-described “steward of Black culture,” she will continue to push for more representation of Black artists, while also encouraging more people to come and appreciate the work. Last fall, the Studio Museum reopened in its newly designed 82,000 square foot, seven-story [building on 125th Street](https://www.nytimes.com/2025/11/10/style/studio-museum-harlem-building.html) that features additional galleries, artist studios, and public spaces designed to increase community engagement.
