Courtesy Synchron Synchron’s brain-computer interface, or BCI, aims to enable people who are paralyzed or have severe motor impairment to control smartphones or other digital devices using only their thoughts. The investigational device, a tiny array of electrodes, is implanted into a blood vessel in the brain without requiring surgery, similar to how stents are placed. “It’s transformative that there’s now a potential therapy to overcome a broken nervous system,” says CEO and founder Tom Oxley. The Brooklyn, N.Y.-based company has conducted two clinical trials—one patient was [recently](http://youtube.com/watch?v=YK8r5vdpozA "undefined") shown controlling an iPad, making it the first BCI to do so—and is preparing for a larger-scale study in the coming months.
