In March 2025, Boston Metal completed an industrial test of its Molten Oxide Electrolysis (MOE) technique, which uses renewable electricity to convert iron ore directly into pure liquid metal, without any CO₂ byproduct. Decarbonizing steel, says CEO Tadeu Carneiro, “is one of the most powerful levers for climate progress.” The test used a school-bus-sized reactor built to withstand corrosive, lava-hot conditions, and produced more than one ton of metal. Carneiro says the company is “on track” to deliver cost-competitive green steel technology by 2028.
