Fortescue, an Australian mining company that transports iron ore, is tackling the problem with ammonia, a promising alternative to traditional marine fuels. “It doesn't produce carbon dioxide when you burn it," says Andrew Hoare, the company’s head of marine systems and green shipping. Fortescue's Green Pioneer, a first-of-its-kind vessel powered by ammonia and diesel, set sail on a global tour this year, demonstrating safe refueling with the corrosive chemical, which requires special handling. Fortescue is exploring how to best retrofit the rest of its fleet with ammonia-only engines, in order to reduce emissions from the shipping of its iron ore by 50 per cent over 2021 levels by 2030.
