To ensure cups of joe for generations to come, the nonprofit World Coffee Research (WCR) in 2022 formed the [Innovea Global Coffee Breeding Network](https://worldcoffeeresearch.org/programs/global-breeding-network "undefined"), bringing together companies and government-affiliated research institutions to develop new varieties. This year, researchers in nine countries including Costa Rica and Rwanda have begun breeding trials. Farmers will likely have to wait until 2037 for the new, more resilient varieties, says Vern Long, CEO of WCR, but that’s still sooner than ever before. “We’re creating the best genetics by working together at scale,” Long says.
