It was proof of concept for FireSat, a next-level wildfire detection system that can identify “fires as small as 5-by-5 meters—about the size of a one-car garage—long before they grow into disaster fires,” says Brian Collins, executive director of Earth Fire Alliance (EFA). In collaboration with Muon Space and Google Research, the nonprofit plans to build by 2030 a constellation of 50 satellites outfitted with advanced infrared sensors that scan the planet’s most fire-prone regions every 20 minutes. Nine fire agencies on three continents are now using the system.
