Almost 25 years after his father died of heart failure, Australian biomedical engineer Daniel Timms is trying to revolutionize cardiac care. Timms’ company [BiVacor](http://bivacor.com) makes an artificial heart that, just like the real thing, can propel blood throughout the body. As part of an ongoing feasibility study, three U.S. patients this year received BiVacor hearts, which kept them alive long enough to wait for donor organs. That result is “remarkable,” Timms says, but his ambitions are even bigger. If short-term trials are successful, BiVacor will test whether its heart can work indefinitely, perhaps eliminating the need for live-organ transplants altogether. “This device didn’t exist for my family,” Timms says, but it could be life-changing—and life-saving—for others. And I think it's, you know, the same reason people appreciate dance or choreography and movies, you know, fight scenes, et cetera. And then combine that with mechanical engineering and machines. We started the company based on a real enabling technology that we understood. We knew we were going to be able to go where people go. And then the question is, you know, we need to build a business that's doing useful work in the world. And so we had an idea of what that was. You know, we imagined what useful work is going to be. But, you know, until we really engaged with customers who told us what their problems were, and then we started figuring out how to actually do the tasks, and, you know, ultimately, things like picking up boxes and totes and moving them around in a warehouse. That's when I knew it. Like, we had solved an actual problem for somebody. The technology was a match for a pain point that a customer had. And we're gonna be able to refine this thing and then really get it to be good.
