What chance did a half-silly, half-sophisticated spy caper have? Audiences were going nuts for Spandex and masks; they were much less hip to the vocabulary of bespoke suits and Courreges-style mini-dresses. Maybe that’s why the ultra-stylish, if sometimes stylistically overindulgent, _Man from U.N.C.L.E._ did only moderately well in ticket sales, though it’s so much fun that it deserves reconsideration. This is Ritchie’s riff on the Cold War-era TV show in which Robert Vaughn and David McCallum played spies from opposite sides of the Iron Curtain who team up to crush the enemies of world peace. Here, their characters, Napoleon Solo and Illya Kuryakin, are played by big-time lookers [Henry Cavill](https://time.com/6298126/witcher-season-3-ending/) and Armie Hammer. Alicia Vikander is a saucy auto mechanic, decked out in a series of 1960s outfits designed to slay, including a faint-worthy silver-and-white metallic coat-and-mini-dress combo. The story opens in 1963 Berlin and involves the usual Cold War-era intrigue, which almost always involves foiling some baddie’s plot to activate nuclear warheads. But the plot is throwaway. You’ve really shown up, haven’t you, for the beautiful people, fabulous clothes, and luxe European locales. If you already live in a palazzo, you might not have much interest in things like meticulously landscaped gardens, glossy Formula 1 race cars, and old-school luxury hotels.
