The 2015 drama _Mustang_, directed by Turkish-French filmmaker Deniz Gamze Ergüven, and co-written by Ergüven and Alice Winokur, follows five sisters in a remote Turkish town sometime in the 2010s. On the last day of the school term the sisters, filled with the school’s-out exuberance that’s the province of the young, decide to walk home rather than take the bus. Having fallen in with a group of schoolboys, they stop by a river and begin to play: the girls sit astride the boys’ shoulders in a game of “chicken fight.” By the time they return home, their grandmother (Nihal Koldaş) is furious, having already heard from a neighbor about the girls’ improper behavior. She punishes them by confining them to the family house for the summer, where they alternately focus on household tasks and laze around in the open windows, the only type of freedom available to them—there’s a _Virgin Suicides_\-style dreaminess to their quieter moments. Then their grandmother becomes fixated on marrying off the two oldest girls (played by Tuğba Sunguroğlu and İlayda Akdoğan) leaving only three behind. What happens to them—and particularly how the youngest, Lale, played by a perceptive, heartrending young actor named Güneş Şensoy, pushes back against the misogynist constraints of her family, and her culture—gives _Mustang_ its delicate emotional power.
