But for all the criticism leveled at the movie—it was inscrutable, it was messy, the dialogue was silly—_Masked and Anonymous_ has turned out to be prophetic in its vision of a cracked America being broken apart by bad actors. The movie takes place in an America where disorder and violence rule the day; liars and manipulators are everywhere. [John Goodman’s](https://time.com/7282350/how-the-righteous-gemstones-ends/) Uncle Sweetheart is a sleazy promoter who’s organizing a benefit concert ostensibly to help victims of an ongoing political revolution, though he’s really planning to pocket most of the profits himself. But he’s having trouble attracting a headliner. The best he can come up with is a has-been musician, Dylan’s Jack Fate, who has long been imprisoned for an unspecified crime. Sweetheart gets Jack sprung from prison specifically to play the concert; he emerges wearing a jaunty beige Hank Williams suit and a cowboy hat, a guitar in one hand and a garment bag slung over his other shoulder. What more does a traveling troubadour need, beyond his axe, his charm, and some groovy threads? Some of the dialogue is profound (“Keeping people from feeling free is big business”) and some of it is merely the result of Dylan’s kooky sense of humor (like a brief soliloquy on cellulose, and how cows can digest it but humans can’t). With his backing band, Jack Fate sings actual Dylan songs, though the movie is also dotted with marvelous Dylan covers, including a Japanese version of "My Back Pages" by the Magokoro Brothers.
