The late underground comic-book writer Harvey Pekar, the cracked mastermind behind the autobiographical _American Splendor_ comics—published from 1976 to 2008 and illustrated by a variety of artists, chief among them Robert Crumb—may seem like a weird choice for a biopic. But with this hugely entertaining, inventively made picture from 2003, writer-directors Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini show how Pekar—played, brilliantly, by [Paul Giamatti](https://time.com/6333666/the-holdovers-real-inspiration/)—would likely be the most interesting person in any room he happened to find himself in. As Giamatti plays him, Pekar is a generous crank, a closet idealist. He’s attuned to the world around him—specifically the world of Cleveland, where he lives—and the people who inhabit it. Those include his co-workers at the Cleveland Veteran’s Administration hospital; wives, current and ex-, as well as girlfriends real and imaginary; and friends or acquaintances he runs into on the street. Pekar’s observations about these people, along with musings about his own neuroses and insecurities, made up the wild world of _American Splendor_ comics, and Giamatti shows how one man’s obsessive observational skills can open up a new world for us too. He captures the degree to which Pekar likes the people around him, not in spite of their quirks but because of them. The warmth of _American Splendor_ is for real, and it enwraps you.
