And she’s not totally wrong. _20th Century Woman_ is a radiant, funny picture about coming of age in an unconventional household, anchored by a great performance from Bening: In her red lipstick, Birkenstocks, and loose-fitting trousers, Dorothea is fizzy and electric, one of those 20th-century moms who carved out an independent life for herself even as she bristled at the idea of being labeled anything so definitive as a feminist. This is also a movie about a young man who perceives the loneliness of his mother’s life, feeling helpless in the face of it.
