Housed in the former Beaux-Arts mansion of steel magnate Henry Clay Frick, the institution is renowned for its intimate presentation of European fine and decorative arts, spanning the Renaissance through the late 19th century, displayed not in white-box galleries but in richly appointed domestic rooms. After a $220 million restoration designed by Selldorf Architects, the Frick reopened last April—right in time for its 90th anniversary—revealing its most consequential change yet: access to an entirely new floor. For the first time, visitors can ascend to the second-floor living quarters once occupied by Henry Clay, Adelaide Frick, and their daughter Helen Clay Frick where artworks have been returned to their original settings. Most notably, François Boucher’s beloved eight-painting series _The Arts and Sciences_ has been rehung in Adelaide’s upstairs boudoir, where it once lived. The renovation also brings a new exhibition gallery, auditorium, education room, restaurant, coffee bar, restored 70th Street Garden, and improved ADA access. But the true achievement is subtler. By reopening its private rooms, the Frick restores the sensation that has always made it singular: the privilege of being invited inside.
