Conceived as a family-friendly farm and learning center built almost entirely from bamboo, [Kaway’an EcoPark](https://kawayanecopark.com/) is the culmination of a long-held vision by entrepreneur Rosie Tsai, developed in close collaboration with designer Elora Hardy and Sangay Architects. Tsai has likened bamboo—remarkably strong and resilient—to the Filipino spirit, and together the pair set out to reframe the material, often dismissed in the Philippines as “poor man’s timber,” as a foundation for climate-resilient design and outdoor education. Kaway'an, which means bamboo in Tagalog, is an oasis that includes a 4,900-sq.-ft. open-air Grand Pavilion—engineered with a steel skeleton to withstand typhoons—and the swooping Marajuyo Bridge, which arches over a lagoon. Clusters of bamboo columns beneath the pavilion’s canopy lend the space an enchanted, forest-like ambience. Since opening last July, visitors have been making the 90-minute drive from Manila to meander through the permaculture gardens, picnic on the vast lawns, go boating or horseback riding, birdwatch, take yoga classes, or, naturally, participate in the workshops on bamboo farming.
