For World Cup champion and gold medalist Kelley O’Hara, the growth of women’s sports and the fight for equal pay is about more than just the money.

“My biggest learning from our fight for equal pay with U.S. Soccer was there is power in the collective,” O’Hara said, referencing the [U.S. women’s national soccer team](https://time.com/6178467/us-women-soccer-equal-pay-deal/)’s equal pay lawsuit. When the team settled with U.S. Soccer Federation in 2022, the U.S. made history as the first nation to split FIFA World Cup prize money equally among both men and women.

O’Hara spoke on a panel with others involved in women’s sports at the TIME Women of the Year Leadership Forum in Los Angeles on Tuesday, moderated by TIME CEO Jessica Sibley.

The panel also included two-time Olympian and gold medalist Jordan Chiles, ESPN commentator and former WNBA All-Star Chiney Ogwumike, and chair of Deloitte U.S., Lara Abrash.

O’Hara recalled the feeling of entering the national team in 2010, and realizing her responsibility as a player to help make poor conditions better for all female athletes.

“You start to look around and you're like, ‘This is my reality, and I'm part of this ecosystem, so I'm now the person that has to go change something,’” she said, adding that she hopes people look at her team’s fight and success, and use it to fight for their own equal rights in the workplace. "If you want to see some change, go be the change.”

Ogwumike said that collective action does not just need to happen among teams, but also among sports. She recalled how former soccer star and O’Hara’s former teammate Megan Rapinoe gave players of the WNBA notes to use for their own fight for better pay in women’s basketball.

“The collective is real,” she said. “And even though we may post on social media our own individual stories behind the scenes, we have each other's back.”

Ogwumike also added that as the brand of women’s sports grows, it’s important to not compare women to men. This is a “pivotal moment” in women’s sports, she said, with sponsorships growing 50% faster than men’s leagues, according to the [World Economic Forum](https://www.weforum.org/stories/2025/06/women-s-sports-growth-is-a-win-for-investors-brands-and-the-planet/) last year, and the WNBA recently being cited as the [fastest growing brand](https://www.forbes.com/sites/susanmshaw/2025/02/04/the-wnba-was-the-fastest-growing-brand-in-professional-sports-in-2024/#) in professional sports. Continued investment in women’s sports will come from recognizing that women’s sports can stand on its own.

“We have women going and playing, and then giving birth and then bringing their children to the arena and then teaching them at night and reading them bedside stories. There's no comparison for the power of women,” Ogwumike said. “In my opinion, it's now getting that investment to understand that this is a league. These are sports that can stand on their own.”

Pointing to the diversity of women in the WBNA, she added, “we should never shrink ourselves to a box where we just compare it to something else.”

For Chiles, who was a [TIME Women of the Year honoree in 2025](https://time.com/7373010/jordan-chiles-bronze-medal-swiss-court-decision/), part of finding her own success was about her individuality and recognizing that she deserved to be at the Olympics.

**Read more:** [Jordan Chiles: Athletes Deserve the Truth](https://time.com/7373010/jordan-chiles-bronze-medal-swiss-court-decision/)

“Going into Paris, I was like, 'You know what? No matter the rules, no matter what's going on, no matter all of those things, how can I put myself in a better position to understand you deserve to be here. You deserve to be a part of these other girls,'” Chiles said. “I think that's where my authenticity came into play—I don't think you've ever really seen a gymnast with this many tattoos.”

That individuality helped her be a good teammate to the rest of the U.S. Olympic gymnastics team, she added.
“They could trust me that I wasn't going to dim my light,” she said.

Abrash, of Deloitte—which sponsored the event—said there’s much to be admired about these authentic and diverse qualities of female athletes, and these qualities can be just as important in the business world.

“You cannot teach leadership. You can't give someone grit who doesn't have grit. You can't make a recipe and try to create resilience or agility in someone. This is what athletes have,” she said.

She urged audience members to not just invest in women’s sports, and also hire women’s athletes.

“Bring athletes into your organization and empower them to be leaders, and you will have an amazing organization.”
