Leaders in the arts, sciences, sports, and education gathered at the 2026 TIME Women of the Year gala in Los Angeles to celebrate their wins, push each other towards excellence, and inspire the next generation to help shape the world around them.

Oscar-nominated actor [Teyana Taylor](https://time.com/collections/women-of-the-year/7377905/teyana-taylor-interview/) was among the Women of the Year honorees to address the room Tuesday evening. ”I'm just so honored that I get to just be here with you all tonight—and honestly, every other amazing woman that is sitting here as well,” she said, shining the spotlight back on her peers.

Taylor’s fellow honorees—Olympic gold medalist [Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone](https://time.com/collections/women-of-the-year/7377881/sydney-mclaughlin-levrone/), writer and director [Chloé Zhao](https://time.com/collections/women-of-the-year/7377903/chloe-zhao-interview/), biotech CEO [Reshma Kewalramani,](https://time.com/collections/women-of-the-year/7377894/reshma-kewalramani-2026/) and advocate [Sister Norma Pimentel](https://time.com/collections/women-of-the-year/7377896/sister-norma-pimentel-2026/)— also delivered heartfelt toasts. Capturing the attention of the room, they spoke of the unique pressures of being a woman and their excitement in being recognized for excelling in their respective fields.

The gala concluded with a performance from honoree and singer [Brandi Carlile](https://time.com/collections/women-of-the-year/7377901/brandi-carlile/), who was introduced by actor [Lucy Liu](https://time.com/collections/women-of-the-year/7377883/lucy-liu/).

You can take a look at what the speakers had to say, here:

## **Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone**

Champion hurdler McLaughlin-Levrone, who[ has her sights set](https://time.com/collections/women-of-the-year/7377881/sydney-mclaughlin-levrone/) on the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Olympics, opened up about the struggle of striving for perfection as a woman.

At the start of her record-breaking athletic career, McLaughlin-Levrone was never quite “satisfied,” she told attendees. But she has since learned to strive for excellence, not perfection.

“Striving for excellence, in my eyes, is not about gratifying my ego or satisfying the need to be loved and affirmed by others, but instead, it's a joyful endeavor to submit to the reality that I'm not perfect,” she said, before pointing to religion as her north star and referencing her next adventure: motherhood. “Whether I win or lose a race, whether I am the same athlete stepping back onto the track after this pregnancy or not, my values are secure in Christ.”

She hopes that her future daughter and other young women can learn from her experience, and know that they “can be deeply feminine and fearless at the same time.”

## **Dr. Reshma Kewalramani**

Kewalramani, CEO and president of Vertex Pharmaceuticals, talked about moving to the U.S. when she was around 11 years old and being the child of immigrant parents.

Kewalramani took the helm of Vertex in 2020—a move that made her the first female CEO of a large, public biotechnology company. But she told gala attendees that, initially, it wasn’t a job her parents wanted for her, nor did she want it for herself.

“The reason my parents didn't want it for me is because they didn't know any CEOs,” she said. “The reason I didn't want it for myself is I didn't know that that path existed. It wasn't confidence, it wasn't drive, it wasn't skill, it wasn't ability. I just didn't know.”

“If I had known, I would have actually tried to be what I am today,” she said, adding that mentors along the way saw things in her that she didn’t see in herself.

Kewalramani went on to share stories about the company’s medical successes, such as how it delivers breakthrough drugs for cystic fibrosis. “That is science,” she said, to applause from the room.

She finished by giving a “big shout out” to all the women in the room—and beyond—who are “living their life unabashedly the way they want to.”

## **Teyana Taylor**

Taylor asked the other 2026 Women of the Year honorees in attendance to stand up, giving them a moment to be celebrated alongside her.

“If you would have told me—15-year-old me from Harlem—that one day I would be standing here amongst all of you… I would tell God, ‘don't threaten me with a good time,’” she said.

The [_One Battle After Another_](https://time.com/7318569/one-battle-after-another-review-paul-thomas-anderson/) actor said the honor was not about “perfection” but instead about “evolution” and “growth.” She recognized the significance of community and how other women had held her up.

“I'm celebrating every woman in this room who is building something, breaking something, healing something, or becoming something,” she said. “This is our time.”

## **Sister Norma Pimentel**

Pimentel, the executive director of Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley (CCRGV)—a place of refuge that has served more than 100,000 migrants—spoke about what gives her hope.

“What gives me hope for the future are people I have the privilege to have walked alongside every day, especially the families and the children who arrive at the border after journey and filled with uncertainty and a lot of hardship,” she said. “When you listen to their stories, you realize something very important… every single story has a face.”

The people that inspire her the most, she added, are not so much “the famous and the powerful,” but those whose everyday sacrifices help make the world—or the lives of their children—better.

“They are the mothers who keep walking for the sake of their children, the fathers who refuse to give up on their families, and the volunteers and communities who choose to have compassion,” she said. “When I see that courage and generosity, I know that hope is still very much alive in our world today.”

## **Chloé Zhao**

Writer, director, and producer Zhao said she wanted to be present and speak from the heart.

She read from a large journal, in which she had written about her experience visiting Sequoia National Forest shortly before the Women of the Year Gala.

She spoke of an old tree she had lovingly named “grandmother,” which she had to wade through patches of burned forest to get to.

“When I got to the trail, I was feeling very restless, knowing that this is the first time—and very well \[could\] be the last time—that I would see this tree, this ancient being, this elder, this keeper of ancestral memory,” Zhao said. “However, once I stood in front of her, I didn't feel like crying… all I felt was peace, because she stood there for almost 3,000 years watching everything around her being born, dying, and being born again, with a gentle indifference. That moment inspired a tender surrender in me.”

She spoke of the extremity of wildfires in recent years and the devastating impact they can have.

“Nature gives, and also takes,” she said.

“I may never see this grandmother \[tree\] again, but I'm glad I got to speak about her tonight, and to thank her for her wisdom and for giving me hope that nature will always find its way,” she added.

Speaking from the perspective of the tree, Zhao finished her speech with poignant words of wisdom: “Let what needs to die, die, and clear the space for a new story to come through. Remember the end is the beginning.”
