Last week, a diverse group of leaders, advocates, and practitioners working across sectors gathered in Chicago for the W.K. Kellogg Foundation’s inaugural Every Child Thrives Festival. The foundation, led by president and CEO La June Montgomery Tabron, is one of the largest philanthropic institutions in the United States and is dedicated to ensuring that all children have an equitable and promising future—a focus reflected by the festival’s stated mission of bringing together people to spark bold ideas and inspire meaningful change.

The three-day festival kicked off at the newly-opened Obama Presidential Center on Tuesday, June 23, with a jam-packed day of conversation and insight. In the morning, TIME editorial director Lucy Feldman moderated a [conversation on the power of storytelling](https://time.com/collection/visionaries/2026/storytelling-to-transform-systems/) with Dorothea Gillim, executive producer and creative director of PBS member station GBH Kids; Ailen Arreaza, executive director of ParentsTogether; Bridgit Antoinette Evans, chief executive officer of Pop Culture Collaborative; and Uly Morazan, a content creator and comedian.


At the same time, TIME executive editorial director Cate Matthews sat down with Maisie Brown, Nicole Li, and Syda Segovia Taylor—grassroots activists from Mississippi, Tennessee, and Illinois, respectively—to discuss [multigenerational organizing](https://time.com/collection/visionaries/2026/creating-intergenerational-change/). And TIME for Kids Editor in Chief Andrea Delbanco led a conversation about how [Americans can overcome division](https://time.com/collection/visionaries/2026/bridging-divides-brighter-future-for-every-child/) to build opportunity for kids and families. “The answer to division is not compromise; it’s capacity,” said Nat Kendall-Taylor, one of three panelists and CEO of FrameWorks Institute, a think tank that studies people’s perspectives on social issues. “It’s really thinking about the skills we need to have conversations across differences.” 

What’s A Piece Of Advice You’d Give Young Changemakers?

That afternoon, two TIME100 Talks took place before a highly-engaged audience. First, Delbanco moderated a [conversation about youth mental health](https://time.com/collection/visionaries/2026/time100-talks-shaping-the-next-generation-seen-supported-connected-time-visionaries/) with 17-year-old [Sarah Shelke](https://time.com/collection/visionaries/2026/sarah-shelke/), who leads Mind4Youth, a youth-led mental health nonprofit with 170 chapters and more than 25,000 volunteers across 71 countries; [Jaymes Black](https://time.com/collection/visionaries/2026/jaymes-black/), CEO of the Trevor Project; and psychologist and author Lisa Damour. Following their conversation, Feldman took the stage with actor and activist [Wilson Cruz](https://time.com/collection/visionaries/2026/wilson-cruz/) to discuss [how creativity and advocacy can foster healing](https://time.com/collection/visionaries/2026/leading-with-purpose-advocacy-storytelling-and-community-impact/) within our communities. (In June, Shelke, Black, and Cruz were named to [TIME’s inaugural Visionaries list](https://time.com/collection/visionaries/2026/), which recognizes leaders helping young people reach their full potential.)

The next day, acclaimed poets Amanda Gorman and Manuel González met for a conversation on the power of the written and spoken word. Attendees then took part in immersive sessions across the city, including “Making Youth Spaces Healing Spaces” at Build Chicago, a violence prevention and youth development agency, and “Partnering with Families and Communities for Students' Success” at the Chicago Public School Office of Family and Community Engagement. The day concluded with a premiere screening of selections from How We Heal, a filmmaking initiative spotlighting stories of racial healing and shared humanity.

On June 25, the festival concluded with final reflections and performances, including an improvisation workshop led by Second City, the legendary Chicago theater that launched some of comedy’s biggest names, and a tour of the Obama Presidential Center Museum. The central theme running throughout the day and the festival: working together on behalf of each and every child. 

As Paul Martinez, a leader on the Kellogg Foundation’s executive council, said in his closing remarks following a breakout session, “When you feed a child, they can better learn. When you educate a child, they can better dream… The future that we are building together is bright, and I have full faith.”
