Tennis champion and entrepreneur [Maria Sharapova](https://time.com/archive/6674437/how-she-got-to-no-1/) joined CBS Mornings co-host and Oprah Daily editor-at-large [Gayle King](https://time.com/collections/100-most-influential-people-2019/5567840/gayle-king/) onstage on April 22 at the TIME100 Summit in New York City for a conversation about the launch of her new podcast and her induction last year into the Hall of Fame.

Sharapova, who grew up in Russia and moved to the U.S. to pursue tennis at 7 years old, is a five-time Grand Slam champion, Olympic medalist, and Hall of Famer who came into the global spotlight when she upset Serena Williams in the 2004 Wimbledon final at age 17\. Last year, Williams introduced Sharapova as she was inducted into the Hall of Fame, a moment seen as representing [an end of their rivalry](https://www.usopen.org/en%5FUS/news/articles/2025-08-25/maria%5Fsharapova%5Fand%5Fserena%5Fwilliams%5Fend%5Frivalry%5Fas%5Fpart%5Fof%5Fhall%5Fof%5Ffame%5Finduction.html). Sharapova shared with King that she had called Williams personally to ask her to make the introduction. “I have had some of the toughest moments and some of the biggest victories on the court here with Serena, and, at the end of the day, we have so much deep respect for each other, and there was no one that I see, other than her, up on stage,” Sharapova said.

_Join us on_ [_TIME's YouTube_](https://www.youtube.com/time) _for the 2026 TIME100 Gala Red Carpet Livestream, starting at 6:00 p.m. EST on April 23, 2026—and available after on demand_

Her ability to secure a variety of high-profile endorsement deals with luxury brands such as Porsche, Evian, and Tiffany made her sports career successful commercially as well as on the court, and when she [retired in 2020](https://www.espn.com/tennis/story/%5F/id/28785010/maria-sharapova-retires-tennis-19-year-pro-career), she continued to make [waves in fashion](https://www.nytimes.com/2025/08/24/style/maria-sharapova-tennis-hall-of-fame-podcast.html) and business, sitting on the board of Moncler and serving as global ambassador for Nike. Beyond fashion, Sharapova has also invested in or advised businesses like Supergoop!, Bala Bangles, Tonal, Therabody, Public.com, MoonPay, and Cofertility.

Her current dynamism can be traced back to her playing career, during which Sharapova at times was [a subject of controversy](https://time.com/4919465/sharapova-us-open-halep/), but said that she maintained “boundaries” between her time on and off court. In this time, she “got to take meetings with incredible people, incredible brands. I got to learn. I got to take classes at Harvard. I got to take internships with Adam Silver at the NBA,” she said.

[In April,](https://www.instagram.com/mariasharapova/reel/DXJlx9lBRAP) Sharapova announced that she was planning to break into the male-dominated podcasting world with “[Pretty Tough](https://open.spotify.com/show/0naRuMMM6K0QK8Ic8JQbVI?si=5d8871db379845f2&nd=1&dlsi=0722e29871cf45c1),” a series of interviews she hosts with powerful women about their “pursuit of achievement without apology,” starting with guests like actress [Zoe Saldaña](https://time.com/article/2026/04/15/zoe-saldana-time100-interview/) and L.A. Lakers co-owner [Jeanie Buss](https://time.com/7261548/running-point-true-story-jeanie-buss/). The message behind the “Pretty Tough” brand was inspired by the challenges and questions Sharapova faced in her career. Her “steely mentality” of determination and focus early on—which earned her the reputation of “ice queen,” as King put it—was also what she attributed her victories to.

Nowadays, Sharapova’s competitive spirit has softened and she said she doesn’t play that much tennis anymore, sharing that: “I find things that keep my body active. Movement is such a big part of my life, but in different forms.” This is a topic she discussed with Saldaña, who used to be a former dancer, in the first episode of “Pretty Tough.” “We knew what our bodies felt like at the top of our careers, right? And it just doesn't feel quite there,” Sharapova said. “Why not do things that expose our better sides?”
