Rapid AI progress is enabling the automation of increasingly more entry-level work. How should leaders respond? The question framed a panel discussion at the TIME100 Summit in New York City on April 22, which featured three executives whose work is closely tied to the technology. The conversation was moderated by TIME executive editor Nikhil Kumar.

“A year ago, I never thought the advancements that have happened would happen,” said Booking Holdings CEO Glenn Fogel, who appeared on a similar TIME panel in 2025\. Whereas a year ago, people were merely talking about agentic AI, [today](http://time.com/7381463/chat-code-claw-ai-agents-teams) they are actually implementing functional agentic systems. (Booking.com, a subsidiary of Booking Holdings, was a sponsor of the 2026 TIME100 Summit.)

Clara Shih, founder of dear \[CC\] and senior advisor and founder of Business AI at Meta, agreed, emphasizing the rate at which AI models are improving. “We are living through the biggest reorganization of human labor ever,” she said. “It’s faster than the Industrial Revolution. It’s faster than the internet. And there’s no equivalent to the G.I. Bill or the union yet defined.”

Shih is particularly concerned about Gen Z, noting they are entering the [worst](https://fortune.com/2026/03/21/entry-level-jobs-gen-z-not-their-fault/) entry-level job market in 37 years, and that the generation’s experience was bifurcating, as those with AI skills find it easy to find work, while those without them are “in a much tougher spot.” Shih announced that she was launching a new nonprofit, the [New Work Foundation](https://www.dearcc.org/), which develops free AI tools to help young American workers participate in the changing economy.

_Join us on_ [_TIME's YouTube_](https://www.youtube.com/time) _for the 2026 TIME100 Gala Red Carpet Livestream, starting at 6:00 p.m. EST on April 23, 2026—and available after on demand_

Fogel echoed the concern: entry-level positions are particularly at risk. Using his own company as an example, he said that a lot of customer service work that used to be done by workers in the Philippines is now being done by AI. “Customers love it, because it’s faster, you’re not on hold for an hour, and the bot knows exactly how to solve your problem,” he said. But the consequence is that a human loses their entry point into the working world. “That lowest rung on the ladder has been pulled away by AI.” The rate of change compounds the challenge. “In the past, we had technological changes—jobs disappeared—but there was enough time for people to learn a new job. Now it's happening overnight.”

The panel turned to Navrina Singh—founder and CEO of Credo AI, a startup which sells a software platform that helps companies govern their use of AI—to reflect on how society might navigate these changes. Singh’s attitude was one of disciplined optimism. She pointed to the need for investment in AI guardrails to increase the technology’s trustworthiness, and the need for leaders to focus on re-skilling and re-training people. Companies must treat governance not as a roadblock but as a “launchpad for innovation,” she said. Recognizing the dual challenges of facilitating international cooperation and having policy keep pace with innovation, Singh emphasized the value of public-private partnerships. Leaders need to step up in the face of uncertainty, particularly in relation to re-skilling workers. “There are no playbooks in AI right now,” she said.

“Why should we trust the people who are building the technology?” asked Kumar. “You shouldn’t. We have to earn that trust,” Shih replied. She gave an example, from the perspective of companies deploying the technology. “I know a CEO who has realized that he doesn't need a large percentage of his workforce, especially in the entry level, because of the AI automation that they've rolled out,” she said. “He’s choosing to slow roll that change and investing as much as he can to upskill those individuals,” so he can retain as many as possible, and so the rest will be better equipped for future opportunities. “These are the types of decisions that we all can make every day in the boardroom and in the executive team,” she said.

Fogel agreed, emphasizing the need to upskill his workforce, so that “even if at some point we no longer need a certain part of the unit of our business, I want to make sure that their skills are increased so they can get a different job at another place and be successful.”

Shih pointed to a recent [Gallup](https://news.gallup.com/poll/708224/gen-adoption-steady-skepticism-climbs.aspx) poll which found that 31% of Gen Z feel angry about AI. Her aspiration is that, in a year, many more of them will instead feel hopeful. “The next 12 months are critical,” she said. “AI models are progressing at a rate faster than I think most people realize.”
