Garrett’s moment came in the last week of a 17-game season, whereas previous record holders Michael Strahan got 22.5 sacks with the New York Giants in 16 games, and T.J. Watt of the Pittsburgh Steelers tied that total in 15\. But Garrett was the most efficient terror of this trio: he reached 23 sacks in just 540 opponent pass plays; Strahan needed 567, and Watt 557\. No asterisk necessary: Garrett’s strength, agility, and smarts give quarterbacks fits. A few more monster years could put Garrett within range of Bruce Smith’s all-time career sack record of 200; Garrett will enter his 10th NFL season with 125.5 sacks.
