If there is one word people use to describe [Alysa Liu’s](https://time.com/collection/100-most-influential-people/2026/alysa-liu/) figure skating, it’s _joyful_. In a sport long defined by its rigidity and rigorous training, Liu, 20, is a rebel and role model for simply loving to skate. Her attitude toward competition has made her a fan favorite—at the Milan Cortina Olympics she seemed as excited about Japanese skater Ami Nakai’s bronze medal as she was about [her own gold](https://time.com/7379896/alysa-liu-womens-figure-skating-results-2026-winter-olympics/). “I hope more skaters become friends; it sucks not liking your fellow competitors, because you have to see them all the time,” she says.

But that joy wasn’t always there. Liu made history as the [youngest U.S. national champion](https://time.com/collections/time-100-next-2019/5718840/alysa-liu/) when she was 13, but that accomplishment–and her early mastery of skating’s most difficult jumps–only increased the pressure she felt to execute at the highest level. She expected nothing but perfection from herself and would cry after every fall in practice. “I felt the weight of every mistake I made, and \[at competitions\] if I wasn’t in first place, I was super upset,” she says. “I was so scared of disappointing people.”

Liu knew something was wrong but didn’t have the tools or power to change it. During the COVID pandemic, when her rink closed and she was finally off the ice for the first time on a regular basis, she realized she didn’t really like skating that much. “But I didn’t know how to leave,” she says.

Her talent—she was among the only U.S. women figure skaters at the time to land a [triple axel](https://time.com/7371786/figure-skating-triple-axel-jump-quadruple/)—earned her a spot on the 2022 US Olympic team at age 16\. But a year before the Games, Liu remembers crying uncontrollably as she was jumping rope to warm up before practice. The crying continued on the ice, and her coaches suggested they go for a walk to talk about what was bothering her. “I was grateful for that and told them that I wanted to quit and that I wasn’t happy,” she says. “I had many days like that.”

Still, she says, “I ended up staying. Making the Olympics was the dream for me of everyone around me, and also the dream of my younger self. Although I was struggling to understand, was it really my dream to go to the Olympics as a kid or the dream that everyone else told me I should have?”

After the Olympics in Beijing, where she placed sixth, she decided she was done. “I was good to go,” she says. She enrolled at UCLA, majoring in psychology, and trekked to base camp at Mount Everest. She made friends with many of the sherpas she met, and they continue to stay in touch (yes, they know she’s now an Olympic champion).

During that time, she says, “I never thought about \[skating\], never missed it for a second.” Until she went skiing and reveled in the feeling of flying down the mountain. Eager to recreate that adrenaline rush, she turned back to the ice.

This time, however, she made sure it was different. Skating gave her freedom, a creative outlet, and most importantly, happiness, because this time, she was doing it on her own terms. “I figured out the loophole that if I competed, then I could skate whenever I wanted, and it would justify it,” she says. “But I can’t skip school if I just want to skate for fun. So if I say that competition is the real reason I’m skating, then I can skate for fun.” She insisted on making important decisions about her programs, training schedule, and music choices (her routine set to Donna Summer's "MacArthur Park" boosted the song to [No. 1 on _Billboard_'s Dance Digital Song Sales chart](https://www.billboard.com/music/chart-beat/donna-summer-macarthur-park-tops-dance-chart-alysa-liu-1236190763/)). This all led her to the top of the podium in both [the team](https://time.com/7372984/olympics-figure-skating-gold-us/) and women’s skating events in Milan. “I hear from people who say that their daughters are speaking up for themselves more and going at their dreams harder,” Liu says.

The purity of her purpose isn’t lost on those who watch her skate. “That’s what makes her attitude toward this sport so incredible,” Olympic teammate [Amber Glenn](https://time.com/7362281/amber-glenn-olympics-figure-skating-interview-2026-milan-cortina/) said in Milan. “Of course there’s pressure, but \[for her\] it’s just pure enjoyment.”

Liu hasn’t made plans beyond finishing a skating tour this summer with many of her [Olympic teammates](https://time.com/collection/time100-sports/2026/ilia-malinin/), and she has been busy indulging in her love of fashion, appearing at the Met Gala and serving as a Louis Vuitton house ambassador. Amid the attention, she considers herself an artist who uses the ice as her canvas. “You know how there are some paintings where people don’t know the artist, but they know the painting? I think that’s so beautiful. I wish I could skate anonymously, but I can’t,” she says. “I kind of wish nobody knew me.” Sorry, Alysa, that’s one wish that can’t come true.
