For over a decade, she’s been on a mission to move money to Black feminist movements, but also to challenge norms around who gets funded. “My work has been about shifting how resources move, who controls them, and how we build the infrastructure needed for movements to lead and sustain change,” explains McHarris. In 2021, along with fellow nonprofit and philanthropic leaders Amina Doherty and Hakima Abbas, she co-founded the Black Feminist Fund (BFF), a vehicle providing long-term, flexible funding to movements tackling the intersection of gender and racial injustice. So far, the team has granted over $55 million to 125 movements in 58 countries, creating a lifeline for organizations hit by the backlash against efforts to advance gender and racial equality. According to a 2023 report from BFF, [only 0.1% to 0.35%](https://static1.squarespace.com/static/63e021d24b58945e72d0b01c/t/6455c25b760af64b44a3a2f9/1683341918324/Where+is+the+Money+for+Black+Feminist+Movements.pdf "undefined") of global foundation giving in 2023 went to Black women, girls and trans people—populations further imperiled by the dismantling of U.S. foreign aid and [sharp cuts](https://www.oecd.org/en/publications/cuts-in-official-development-assistance%5F8c530629-en/full-report.html#:~:text=The%20OECD%20projects%20a%209%E2%80%9317%25%20drop%20in,Africa%20%2A%20Health%20sector%20%2A%20Vital%20services "undefined") from other donors. BFF is unique in its remarkably long-term commitments, almost unheard of eight-year grants, and support for the kind of informal organizations often dismissed by funders. “We were like, ‘What rules can we break? What are the things that we can try?’” says McHarris, who believes systemic change can’t be achieved with a three-year grant. The team set out to mobilize $100 million for its first 10-year cycle, and is well on its way to succeeding.
