The couple were [inspired](https://www.schusterman.org/who-we-are/our-story) by the Talmudic fable of Honi the Circle Maker, who said, “Just as my parents planted for me, I too will plant for my children.” The philanthropic organization, which has been led by their daughter Stacy since 2018, has supported organizations that advocate for family and medical leave. It has also supported K-12 literacy programs involving more than a million students in five states. In one district the foundation supports in Richmond, Va., economically disadvantaged students have shown reading improvement at five times the rate of their peers, they say.
