That disparity led Julián Castro, a one-time presidential candidate who served as secretary of Housing and Urban Development under President Barack Obama, to join the Latino Community Foundation as chief executive officer in 2024\. By raising funds in support of Latino-led and Latino-serving organizations, LCF “fills a gap that has existed for a long time,” Castro says. “There are great, effective organizations that are rooted in the Latino community, but often they don’t get the investment they should from philanthropies.” In 2025, the LCF [awarded](https://latinocf.org/california-wildfire-disaster-relief-fund/) more than $5 million to community-based organizations that provided rental assistance and other forms of relief to gardeners, nannies, street vendors, and other vulnerable victims of the Los Angeles wildfires. In February 2026, the organization launched the Community Protection Fund, which is backing nonprofits that are working to hold the Immigration and Customs Enforcement accountable and challenge its actions in court.
