He is restored by throwing himself into the other passions that have come to define him as a multihyphenate, whether that’s deejaying [at a royal wedding](https://time.com/5284280/a-royal-album-harry-and-meghans-wedding/) or driving around in a truck distributing food to the [unhoused](https://time.com/6085841/cori-bush-homelessness-crisis/). “The energy they give you—they’re not taking anything from me. The Elbas are as effortlessly cool as they are disarmingly charming, bringing their infectious energy to the set, cracking jokes and bouncing off each other as we discuss their shared philanthropy. By the time we sit down for our interview, Elba, 53, allows himself a yawn. It’s no wonder he’s tired. He’s in the middle of reviving one of his best-known characters, for the sequel to the 2023 movie [_Luther: The Fallen Sun_](https://time.com/6258255/luther-the-fallen-sun-movie-series-netflix/)_._ The couple are also auditing their business and philanthropic ventures to assess how to run them most efficiently. Elba has a film and TV company named 22Summers, a marketing agency called SillyFace, and record label Sound International, to name a few other projects. Together the couple also have a skin-care brand called S’ABLE Labs.  Kendall Bessent for TIME [_Buy a print of the TIME100 Philanthropy cover here_](https://magazineshop.us/philanthropy26) Dhowre Elba, 37, is a multihyphenate in her own right—model, businesswoman, philanthropist—who has worked by her husband’s side building their nonprofit, [Elba Hope Foundation](https://www.elbahopefoundation.org/). The organization is tackling some of the most pressing issues of our time, with much of its work in Elba’s father’s homeland, [Sierra Leone](https://time.com/collections/worlds-greatest-places-2023/6261863/freetown-peninsula-sierra-leone/), and the actor’s own birthplace, the U.K. It focuses on matters like [food security](https://time.com/collections/davos-2024-ideas-of-the-year/6551985/idris-elba-farmers-food-insecurity/), support for smallholder farmers, embracing sustainability, and youth advocacy. Since it was founded in 2022, Elba Hope has provided food for a million meals through its anti-hunger program Rice for Life, reached 275 under-served young people through its Creative Futures program, and campaigned for stricter knife laws in the U.K., where most [guns are banned](https://time.com/6182186/countries-banned-guns-mass-shooting/) and stabbings are the leading cause of homicides. Beyond a father’s natural worries about his kids’ [safety](https://time.com/4858177/rise-in-acid-attacks-britain/)—he has three children—he fears the issue reflects broader societal problems. “Knife culture is a symptom of other things that are happening in the foundation of communities,” he says. “We’re losing our neighborhood spirit. We’re a lot more insular. I can’t parent your child, you can’t parent my child. Kids are being fed a lot of [hate](https://time.com/5439713/online-hate-speech/) and division.” As community, mentorship, and education erode, “kids turn to their own devices, and knives are one of those things.” Elba is frustrated that his voice is amplified more than those of other campaigners, like families of victims. “Are we so sycophantic that we only care when a celebrity cares?” he says. But he reluctantly accepts the megaphone fame has granted him. In 2024 he launched an anti-knife-crime coalition with British Prime Minister [Keir Starmer](https://time.com/article/2026/04/10/european-leaders-criticize-trump-over-iran-war-starmer-energy-prices/), and successfully pushed for bans on machetes as well as so-called zombie knives and ninja swords in the U.K. The Elba Hope Foundation’s [Don’t Stop Your Future initiative](https://www.elbahopefoundation.org/program-areas/youth-social-justice) advocates for investment in services for young people, addressing social deprivation, and creating compelling alternative opportunities so young people never join a gang or start carrying a knife in the first place. One way the Elbas are making that happen is through their foundation’s [Creative Futures program](https://www.elbahopefoundation.org/creativefutures), which helps marginalized young people in U.K. inner cities join creative industries such as music, theater, visual arts, and media. The program is a partnership with King Charles III’s youth-focused charity, [the King’s Trust](https://www.kingstrust.org.uk/). Elba has his own long history with the charity. When he was a teenager, he received a £1,500 ($2,023) grant from the then Prince’s Trust, which helped support his acting studies and cover living costs when he played the role of Chicago gangster Big Jule in a semi-professional global tour of _Guys and Dolls_ with the National Youth Music Theatre. He has since worked with King Charles on the anti-knife-crime initiative, and, in January, the British government announced Elba would receive a knighthood in recognition of his philanthropy and campaigning. His investiture ceremony will take place in the early summer, according to a spokesperson for the King. For Charles, that Elba has gone on to give other young people opportunities through the Creative Futures program is the “best possible return on his original investment,” the spokesperson says. “It has been such a source of enormous pride and pleasure for His Majesty to see how the young man, first sponsored with a King’s Trust grant, has become the global superstar that is Sir Idris Elba.” Over the past year, Elba has also spent time with the monarch making a documentary for Netflix about the King’s Trust, due to be released in the fall, that promises to give an insight into the warm friendship between Elba and the King. --- > “Knife culture is a symptom of other things that are happening in the foundation of communities.” **Idris Elba** --- Growing up in East London, Elba had watched his father “giving a voice to the unvoiced” as a union representative for Ford Motor Co. He didn’t realize it at the time, but listening to his father’s stories, he developed an affinity with the underdog. “I feel like an underdog, and Elba Hope not just fights for the underdog, but helps give a voice to the underdog, the underserved, the unheard.” Elba had established himself with TV roles in the U.K. before moving to New York City in the early aughts. After a few years of auditioning for roles there—and working on his American accent—he was catapulted to fame when he was cast as the business-savvy drug kingpin Russell “Stringer” Bell in the HBO crime drama [_The Wire_](https://time.com/collections/all-time-100-tv-shows/3103884/the-wire/?jw%5Fstart=%7Bseek%5Fto%5Fsecond%5Fnumber%7D)_._ Marsha Reid, executive director of the Elba Hope Foundation, first got to know Elba through the music and other cultural scenes when they were young adults. She was always struck by his “generosity of spirit” and eagerness to support his friends. They both ended up living in New York City. Part of her job at the time involved hosting multicultural festivals with New York City parks, which Elba would often join. One year, at the peak of his early fame from _The Wire,_ he showed up to a festival in Harlem’s Morningside Park. A crowd of around 1,000 people had already gathered for the event. “The calamity!” says Reid, recalling the “hysteria” of the crowd as Elba made his way to meet her at the top of the hill. She never invited him to another event like that again. “Because he’ll say yes,” she says. His stardom has only swelled, with critically acclaimed roles that include portraying Nelson Mandela in [_Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom_](https://time.com/archive/7118246/todays-movie-trailer-mandela-long-walk-to-freedom/)_._  Elba poses with an installation ­representing lives lost to knife crime in the U.K. Dan Kitwood—Getty Images  The couple speak at the 2025 Global Citizen Festival Theo Wargo—Global Citizen/Getty Images Elba and Dhowre Elba met in 2016 at a jazz bar in Vancouver while he was filming in the city, and the couple married in 2019\. Dhowre Elba had grown up observing the work of her mother Maryam Ali Egal, whom she calls her “philanthropic inspiration.” Ali Egal left Somalia for Canada in 1986, amid a civil war that would bring state collapse. “She watched her country fall apart from Canada on TV, and she was always looking to go back, to repair, to rebuild, to give back, to share stories on whatever she could,” recalls Dhowre Elba. Even as a single mother of five, Ali Egal found time to establish a nonprofit, the [Hooyo Maryam Foundation](https://hmfoundation.ca/), with a goal of educating and supporting women, helping them access water and agricultural development in rural areas of Somalia and other parts of Eastern Africa. (_Hooyo_ means _mother_ in Somali.) “That really influenced my perception of how we should give back as diaspora,” says Dhowre Elba. It also influenced her own focus on women and girls. “I’m, I think, subconsciously, trying to make the world a better place for the young girl that she was,” she says, referring to her mother. Most of the farmers the couple have worked with are women. “The most affected person on this planet by a lot of these issues is a woman and a girl, and generally a woman that looks like me,” Dhowre Elba says. Elba began raising funds for West Africa during the [Ebola](https://time.com/3548047/first-ebola-outbreak-history/) crisis in 2014, working with the U.N. and the U.K.’s Department for International Development. The couple visited Sierra Leone with the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) in 2019, as the country was getting back on its feet, and Elba was granted citizenship that year. They were appointed U.N. Goodwill Ambassadors for IFAD the following year. If anyone can bring attention to topics that IFAD president Alvaro Lario says are “not always sexy to talk about,” it’s _People_’s 2018 [sexiest man alive](https://people.com/movies/idris-elba-sexiest-man-alive-2018-reveal/). Lario describes Elba as a skilled communicator, who can authentically bring attention to issues like rural poverty—which accounts for 80% of global poverty—because he truly cares and feels connected to the issue. “They have really contributed to a strong political recognition of the mission and the vision of IFAD,” says Lario. In 2020 as the [COVID pandemic](https://time.com/5820118/coronavirus-questions-answered/) threatened [food insecurity](https://time.com/collections/time-100-talks/5836831/feeding-america-claire-babineaux-fontenot-time100-talks/) for the world’s poorest and most marginalized rural communities, Dhowre Elba was instrumental in getting Canada to [pledge](https://www.ifad.org/en/w/news/canada-is-first-to-commit-funds-to-ifad-facility-created-to-help-avert-food-crisis) $4.4 million to IFAD’s Rural Poor Stimulus Facility to help prevent a food crisis. And as the fund sought to raise $11 billion in donor contributions for its 12th replenishment, to finance operations from 2022 to 2024, the couple met with a number of world leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, who went on to increase France’s [commitment](https://www.ifad.org/en/ifad12/pledges.html) to the fund by 50%. As they continued to support small-scale farmers in Sierra Leone, they were inspired to launch the Elba Hope Foundation to bring all their philanthropic efforts under one umbrella. Dhowre Elba continues to represent IFAD as it seeks funding for its 14th replenishment, and even as Elba stepped down as an IFAD ambassador to focus on the foundation’s work, he says what he learned in the role has informed what their nonprofit does today. --- > “The most affected person on this planet by a lot of these issues is a woman and a girl.” **Sabrina Dhowre Elba** --- A few miles off the southwestern coast of Sierra Leone, in the Atlantic Ocean, lies Sherbro Island, home to a rice-farming and fishing community of roughly 40,000\. The island, about the size of Chicago, was once used by British slave traders sending enslaved Africans to the Americas and later became a haven for freedmen and freedwomen. With 50 miles of unspoiled beaches and mangrove forests, it is one of the country’s most isolated regions. Electrical power and wireless internet are limited on the island. Together with his childhood friend Siaka Stevens, Elba in 2019 founded Sherbro Alliance Partners, an ambitious project to revitalize its economy. Sherbro, once heavily dependent on fishing, lacks refrigeration to keep a catch fresh long enough to sell on the mainland.  Kendall Bessent for TIME The Elbas hope to turn the island into a renewably powered, self-reliant eco city via the Hope Power Project, in partnership with British power company Octopus Energy Generation. The three-year plan also involves investment in connectivity and improving clean-water access. The wind farm, expected to be running later this summer, consists of five wind turbines along with solar panels and batteries that are meant to power nearly 1,500 homes and businesses, supporting 15,000 islanders, via a small grid in Sherbro’s chief port and commercial center, Bonthe. The project involved creating a new blueprint for power infrastructure on Sherbro, one that was different from that of places like European cities, says Zoisa North-Bond, CEO of Octopus Energy Generation. It also requires working in lockstep with the Sierra Leonean government and local communities. “Idris has been this absolutely extraordinary diplomat in helping us bring that together,” she says. He was even [named](https://sherbroislandcity.com/about/founders/) a chief on the island. It helps that the plan aligns with the government’s [goals](https://thedocs.worldbank.org/en/doc/ce215ab7fd4bf5cd190c8ddb32477fa6-0010012025/original/Sierra-Leone-National-Energy-Compact-Mission-300.pdf) to increase national electricity access to 78% of the population—or 720,000 households—by 2030, from 36% in 2025, and to increase the renewable component of its energy mix to 52% from 46% over the same period. The couple want to reframe how the world sees the second largest continent. “Africa is seen as a place that always needs aid,” says Elba. “Interestingly enough, the [world needs Africa](https://africa.time.com/opinion/a-defining-moment-for-african-economic-transformation/) more than Africa needs the world, because it’s rich in resources.” That means not only commodities like oil and minerals, but also a vast, deep pool of young talent. Dhowre Elba adds that African countries hardly lack solutions to their own problems. They know exactly what they need to do. What’s frustrating, she says, is the lack of political will and funding to get it done. “That’s something that we wanted to address with our organization.” The Elbas see their role as listening to people on the ground and then becoming a voice for them in the rooms where decisions are made. Their work today is just the beginning. Eventually, they want Elba Hope to become an adviser to governments and other leaders based on their own experiences, learnings, and unique perspectives. “I don’t want us to be a charity.
