President of Ukraine/Flickr In 2024, one of Ukraine’s largest printing houses was hit by a Russian missile. Within 24 hours, Howard G. Buffett’s foundation—attuned to the symbolic stakes—committed to fully funding its restoration. The project was completed less than a year later. A farmer, and Warren Buffett’s middle child, Howard Buffett has spent decades traveling to countries facing difficult circumstances in order to understand their needs and offer support. His foundation focuses on food security, conflict mitigation, and combating human trafficking—work that reflects his conviction that philanthropic capital is uniquely positioned to take big risks. Priority regions include Ukraine, El Salvador, Mexico, and Colombia, where Buffett has partnered with pop star Shakira’s foundation. After Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, Buffett and his team were on the ground quickly to vet local partners and understand their priorities. By now, they have given over $1.4 billion in Ukraine to help— $150 million that year, and over $300 million every year since. “For me, philanthropy is not about importing new ideas, but unlocking the potential that already exists to solve problems locally,” he told TIME in a statement. “But to do that well requires showing up.” TIME100 Philanthropy: Howard G.
