“What was the poet’s name?” “Who was that incredible young woman?”

I’ll never forget hearing those questions roll through the audience of the Geffen Playhouse in 2018 when Amanda Gorman stepped off the stage. It was a star-studded Hollywood fundraiser for arts and education programs, a night full of boldface names. But as Amanda delivered her tightrope-taut verse with impossible poise, the room was hers. Sitting in the second row that night, I became a fan for life.

“Who was that?” “What was the poet’s name?”

Those questions ricocheted around the world again on Jan. 20, when [Amanda Gorman delivered her original poem “The Hill We Climb,” at President Biden’s Inauguration](https://time.com/5933596/amanda-gorman-michelle-obama-interview/). If the hardest part of an artist’s job is to fully and honestly meet the moment, Amanda delivered a master class. She spoke truth to power and embodied clear-eyed hope to a weary nation. She revealed us to ourselves.

Here’s the best part: there are so many more moments for Amanda Gorman to meet.

Now the world knows the poet’s name.

## Transcript

[00:01] I am still grappling with the fact
[00:04] that I have entered the historical record.
[00:09] The past couple of weeks have been insane.
[00:12] That's literally the word that just keeps popping up in my head.
[00:16] I don't think I always knew I was going to be the novel poet,
[00:19] but every single time I wrote a public poll
[00:22] before I began writing it, I would tell myself, Write a poem
[00:26] that is worthy of a presidential inauguration.
[00:31] I wanted to hold myself to a high standard
[00:33] that everything that I wrote had to be worthy of hope.
[00:37] It had to be worthy of a future.
[00:40] Because it's really easy to write a poem that makes people feel really bad
[00:43] about themselves and their country and their people and the culture and the race.
[00:47] The real kind of demand and hill the climb, I think, as poets,
[00:51] is to observe that
[00:52] darkness, to listen to it, but also to lead people out of the shade.
[00:57] We lay down our arms so we can reach out our arms to one another.
[01:01] We seek harm to none and harmony for all.
[01:05] I think it's really easy to see someone, especially when they're young,
[01:08] have a kind of electric moment like this and say, Oh, that was instantaneous.
[01:13] Oh, that was so easy.
[01:15] But there was so much labor that was put into that moment, not just for me,
[01:19] but the people who raised me, my ancestors, my family, my community.
[01:23] They have really shepherded me to this moment and encouraged me to live
[01:28] every moment as if I'm making history because they believed that I would.
[01:34] My dream to become president really started,
[01:36] I want to say, in like sixth grade,
[01:39] we had to be really conscious
[01:40] about the image that you're putting out into the world.
[01:42] Not necessarily that you have to be inauthentic,
[01:44] but you are part of a generation.
[01:46] Every single thing you do is going to be documented.
[01:49] So I remember countless times hanging with friends and them taking
[01:52] a selfie and me just not being in it or me removing myself from the situation
[01:57] because I was like, Guys, I'm running for president in 30 years.
[02:00] Got to be careful about what images of me are out there
[02:04] as a black woman.
[02:06] Fashion is always pivotal for me in my self-expression.
[02:09] There's something that we call kind
[02:10] of the politics of respectability in the African-American community,
[02:13] which is to say we are always held to such high standards
[02:17] that even basic things such as our hair or makeup or clothes
[02:22] have a political importance, even thinking back to the civil rights movement,
[02:25] what it meant to march in your Sunday best.
[02:29] So I kind of
[02:30] like to walk forward in that tradition and also redefine it.
[02:33] I like to imagine a type of grace and elegance and regality
[02:37] that actually speaks to the African diaspora.
[02:39] So I made the very intentional choice, for example, to wear my hair
[02:43] natural at the inauguration, to wear my hair and my braids today to say
[02:47] there is a way to be beautiful and regal and gracious in black at the same time.
[02:52] But not mutually exclusive.
[02:54] If anything, the mutually inclusive,
[02:58] we're in such an exciting time, I think, when it comes to black art.
[03:01] When I first began writing, all the stories I wrote
[03:04] were about girls with green eyes and red hair.
[03:08] And it wasn't that, you know, I was against stories that featured skin
[03:12] color was like mine.
[03:13] I just didn't know those existed.
[03:15] I didn't know that was something that I could actually write.
[03:17] And it wasn't until I went to say, enter middle school
[03:20] and I was able to stumble across the Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison.
[03:24] When you know a girl that looks like me on the cover.
[03:27] It just metamorphosis. My thinking,
[03:30] my blackness was in something to hide.
[03:32] It was something to celebrate.
