Today the prediction-market exchange is valued at [$22 billion](https://coincentral.com/kalshi-raises-over-1-billion-as-valuation-hits-22-billion-level/ "undefined"), has more than [5 million users](https://finance.yahoo.com/news/kalshi-prediction-markets-stealing-market-160600765.html?guccounter=1 "undefined"), and sits at the center of a legal fight that could decide whether betting on elections, hurricanes, or inflation counts as finance—or if it’s gambling in a nicer suit. Founded in 2018, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC)-regulated platform lets users buy and sell contracts tied to real-world outcomes, from Federal Reserve decisions to NFL games. "We wanted to build a marketplace where people can express their opinion and trade on any event," says co-founder and CEO Tarek Mansour. The idea has spread quickly: Kalshi generated $263.5 million in fee revenue in 2025, and outlets including CNN and CNBC started publishing its probability data alongside polls and expert forecasts. In February 2026, a [Federal Reserve working paper](https://www.federalreserve.gov/econres/feds/kalshi-and-the-rise-of-macro-markets.htm "undefined") found the platform matched or outperformed traditional Wall Street tools on indicators including inflation and interest rates. But roughly [89% of Kalshi's revenue comes from sports contracts](https://finance.yahoo.com/news/kalshi-fee-revenue-2025-263-145801350.html "undefined"), and several U.S. states have sued the company for allegedly operating an unlicensed gambling business. In March, Kalshi became the first prediction market to face [criminal charges](https://www.cnn.com/2026/03/17/politics/arizona-charges-prediction-market-kalshi "undefined") when Arizona’s attorney general accused it of running an illegal gambling operation in violation of state law.
