Few have mastered the art of going viral better than Maurizio Cattelan. The Italian artist has made headlines for subversive conceptual works that infuriate the masses and sell for eye-popping prices. Highlights include a life-size depiction of Pope John Paul II being struck down by a meteorite (which sold at auction for $2.7 million in 2004) and a fully functional gold toilet called _America_ (Ripley’s Believe It or Not! bought a version for $12.1 million in November). One of his most famous provocations, a banana duct-taped to a wall that last sold for a cool $6.2 million at auction, is on view at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum’s exhibition “Pop: 1960 to Now,” in New York City.

Having grown up in Padua, Italy, in a working-class family, Cattelan entered the art world without formal training. He attributes his nose for inciting conversation—and debate—to his outsider background. His perspective is a “bridge between the elite world and the normal world,” he says.

He imbues his sculptures with humor and surprise designed to spark conversations about serious themes, including mortality and contemporary systems of value and social order—“insanities,” he says, that haunt him. Cattelan’s works have been called sacrilegious, but he insists the shock factor of his work is overblown: “Reality is always more provoking than what I do.”

Cattelan announced his retirement from artmaking after a Guggenheim retrospective in 2011\. That lasted only five years, but it wasn’t until 2024 that he returned to traditional gallery exhibitions, with a show at Gagosian that included 17-ft.-tall gold-plated panels, pockmarked with holes: in a commentary on guns in America, he hired licensed marksmen to fire more than 20,000 rounds of ammunition into the panels. “I only recently started to feel like an artist,” he says. “It’s as if suddenly I had a maturity that probably other artists had out of school or always had.”

The epiphany comes just in time. In September, following Cattelan’s win of the 2026 Preis der National-galerie, Germany’s top contemporary art prize, Berlin’s Neue Nationalgalerie opened his biggest show in years. Uninterested in putting together a “greatest hits” compilation, Cattelan insists the show is not a retrospective. The exhibition, titled “Night,” invokes the events of German history to probe universal concepts of power, defeat, life, and death. It features transgressive new commissions including _Dust,_ a fire extinguisher that, in accordance with the deceased’s wishes, contains the ashes of a friend of Cattelan’s, and _Purgatory,_ a site-specific reconstruction of the Brandenburg Gate. These are shown alongside conversation-starting historical works like Cattelan’s diminutive 2001 sculpture of Adolf Hitler on his knees in prayer, as if asking for forgiveness, which takes on heightened meaning in Berlin.

With shows forthcoming in Mexico City, Buenos Aires, and Sydney, Cattelan no longer sees retirement in the cards. Instead, he will continue his mission to shake both himself and his audience from complacency. And as he turns 66, he is also ready to shed the “court jester” moniker that has dogged his career. The forthcoming Berlin exhibition, he says, “is a show that will finally demonstrate that the label someone gave me some years ago might be excessive and that there is some seriousness and depth in what I do.”
