The 46-year-old’s room-sized installations brim with Benetton-colored walls, paintings, and sculptures that together conjure a feeling of what he calls _jamais vu_—that disorienting sensation where something very familiar suddenly seems strange and new. In Da Corte’s eyes, symbols of American culture, both mass and niche—from Big Bird to the performance artist Allan Kaprow—become mysterious and uncanny. He is best known for his films, especially ones in which he cosplays a motley cast of characters that includes Eminem, Mr. Rogers, and Frankenstein. The goal, Da Corte says, is to “invite a new interpretation of what you see and how you see.” After major showings at the Venice Biennale, the Whitney Biennial, and the Met, De Corte is looking for new challenges.
