Brigitte Lacombe

Daniel Nadler co-founded [OpenEvidence](https://time.com/collections/time100-health-2025/7279622/daniel-nadler/) in 2022 to support overworked, under-resourced doctors. Today, more than a million U.S. clinicians use the app in their work, as a source for up-to-date medical information. The startup says health care professionals consulted OpenEvidence 38 million times in July 2026 alone, and this year it expects over 300 million Americans will be treated by a doctor using OpenEvidence to help make a treatment decision.

So it’s proved crucial that OpenEvidence’s growth has been due to word of mouth rather than mandates by hospital administrators. OpenEvidence allows credentialed physicians to sign up directly for an account, and for free. One doctor who learned of the app organically was Sudheesha Perera, a third-year resident at the Yale School of Medicine, who heard about it from a colleague. Perera liked that the app was trained exclusively on top scientific journals, and gave accurate, validated answers much more quickly than searching Google. The app ingested the vast number of new peer-reviewed studies published every week, helping him keep up with the bleeding edge of medical research. It also complied with federal laws that protected patient health information. Now, Perera uses OpenEvidence daily.

OpenEvidence’s success at winning over individual doctors has led to institutional buy-in from major hospitals like Mount Sinai and the Mayo Clinic, as well as top medical societies. It also partnered with the clinician network Better Evidence this year for usage at the front lines of the Ebola crisis, Nadler says.

Widespread adoption has led OpenEvidence to become one of the hottest AI-related startups. The company closed a $250 million funding round in January led by Thrive Capital and DST, valuing it at $12 billion.

Founder Nadler says that he’s less excited about OpenEvidence’s financial success than its impact. “It’s making it so that a physician practicing in rural southwestern Georgia with a 75% African American population making $43,000 a year can nevertheless have access to an elastically expandable panel of subspecialists,” says Nadler. “It is leveling the delivery of high-quality health care in the United States.” But he emphasizes that it can’t replace doctors.

There are plenty of reasons to be skeptical about health-tech startups promising big things—something that Nadler is acutely aware of. “If you analyze the last 50 years of big hospital systems, there’s this graveyard of tools that have never been used by doctors that the hospital systems paid seven or eight figures for,” he says.

OpenEvidence faces competition from OpenAI and Anthropic’s health offerings, but it has a head start in winning over the medical community. Nadler hopes that even amid AI debates, skeptics can see the benefits of a tool like his. “It’s such a natural, obvious application of AI,” he says.

The company says it topped $100 million in annualized revenue last year, driven mostly by selling ads to pharmaceutical companies. Nadler is adamant that he wants OpenEvidence to be free for users.
