An unmotivated 28-year-old’s existence is given a jolt of new meaning when an old friend invites her to be the governess of her twin stepkids. Being responsible for two 10-year-olds is daunting on its own, but these kids require extra attention because of a strange physiological condition they share: when upset, they spontaneously burst into flames. Though the conceit of the novel is startling, Kevin Wilson treats his characters with such love that the children’s affliction quickly becomes believable. The bigger problem in the nanny’s new world is the twins’ father, a politician more concerned with his image than with his parenting.
