When [Rachel Zegler](https://time.com/collections/time100-next-2023/6308473/rachel-zegler/) was announced the winner of Best Actress in a Musical at the 2026 Laurence Olivier Awards, she initially wasn’t sure she’d won. “It was one of those crazy things,” she says. “Vanessa Williams presented it, and she didn’t do the traditional ‘The winner is ...’ She just said, ‘Get up here, Rachel.’ So I didn’t know what was happening. Then my best friend was like, ‘Go, go, go!’”

As for the role that earned her that honor—playing Eva Perón in Jamie Lloyd’s West End revival of _Evita_—Zegler doesn’t mince words when it comes to how much those 12 weeks she spent performing at the London Palladium meant to her. “That production and having done it with the people I did is my proudest achievement,” she says. “It was the most incredible summer anyone could ever dream of.”


Zegler, 25, is now poised to bring her acclaimed portrayal of the former First Lady of Argentina to Broadway, with previews for the show beginning in February 2027\. The musical’s highly anticipated New York City run will kick-start a chapter in which Zegler is also set to return to the big screen for the first time since starring in Disney’s 2025 live-action version of [_Snow White_](https://time.com/7270401/snow-white-review-disney-remakes/)_,_ and its [assorted controversies](https://time.com/7267440/snow-white-disney-rachel-zegler-gal-gadot/)—ranging from racist trolling about Zegler’s Colombian heritage to debates over her take on the 1937 animated original and heated commentary about the star’s political views.

“It’s a very important thing for all women, but particularly those in this industry, to learn that you’re never going to please everybody,” Zegler says of what she took away from that period of intense scrutiny. “If you are doing everything you can to be fulfilled and to do good work with good people, the rest of it is really just noise.”

Reflecting on how she was criticized for not being “enough of one thing” for her breakout role playing the Puerto Rican character Maria in Steven Spielberg’s [_West Side Story_](https://time.com/6125178/west-side-story-review/) and “too much of another” for _Snow White,_ Zegler maintains she will always be grateful for the formative impact of both films, despite the turbulence. “I was thrilled with the response for _West Side Story._ I won a Golden Globe when I was 20,” she says. “And similarly for _Snow White,_ I was so proud of my performance. It was ultimately a really soul-filling learning experience.”

With a slate of forthcoming features in the pipeline, including indie dramedy _She Gets It From Me,_ psychological thriller _NDA,_ and the [Lin-Manuel Miranda](https://time.com/collections/time-100-talks/5894757/lin-manuel-luis-miranda-hamilton-election-documentary/)–directed _Octet,_ Zegler is now looking ahead to new horizons. “I had one mission this year, which was to work with women and Latinos,” she says. She’s excited for the doors those films will open—“Not just for me, but for the amazing people I got to make them with, who in the past have been disenfranchised in this industry.”

Ultimately, Zegler refuses to let anyone put her in a box. “I love playing fully formed humans with complexities,” she says. “Human beings deserve to be represented for their flaws as well as the things that make them wonderful—I kind of think they’re one and the same.”

My family. They really loved the message of. The worst they can say is no. Like the worst they can say is no. And that doesn't mean everybody's going to say no just because this person has decided that you don't fit the bill of this thing. You don't go in there trying to fit their mold. You show them what the mold could be. A lot of directors in general don't really know what they're looking for until they see it. So if you go in with the mentality that the worst they can say is no. Oftentimes you're going to show them a new version of something that they had never thought of before. This year of filmmaking has been so fulfilling.

I had one mission this year was to work with women and Latinos, and I have done exactly that. Two of the films that I've done, She Gets It From Me and NDA, have been directed by women, and the other two, Octet and The Last Dance, have been directed by Latinos. Getting to work with people like Lin-Manuel Karim Ainouz, Julia von Heinz, Audrey Ellis Fox. It's been like the most soul filling experience. I don't ever want to put myself in a box for what kind of actor I am. I love playing fully formed humans with complexities. Like when I was doing NDA, I was like, you know, I think this is the first time I'm playing a character that's not caring too much if she's likable.

I'm so excited for people to see all of those films, and I'm excited for the doors that they'll open, not just for me, but for the amazing people that I got to make them with who are otherwise in the past have been disenfranchised in this industry.
